Queen Camilla showed off her competitive side as she challenged the First Lady of France to an eventful game of table tennis - before she lost.

Camilla, 76, joined in on the fun at a community centre in Saint-Denis, northern Paris, on Thursday, as King Charles laughed at his wife as she practised ahead of her joyful game with Brigitte Macron.

Ms Macron accepted Camilla's invitation to play and proved to have a few tricks up her sleeve as they went back and forth for a few minutes before she came out on top.

The pair joked as the Queen hit the ball into the net several times. The game was well-spirited as Camilla took her loss on the chin. Meanwhile, Charles was introduced to sports stars including ex-Chelsea footballer Didier Drogba and French rugby prop Demba Bamba.

It came on the second day of the couple’s state visit to France, which is hosting the Rugby World Cup. Charles chatted with Bamba and Welsh rugby player Dan Biggar, who said the King’s visit had given France a lift. Bamba added: “Everyone in France is enjoying the World Cup at the minute so it’s great to have this visit now.”

Charles earlier spoke at the French Senate chambers and said "may the best man win". He highlighted that Prince William and Kate Middleton would also be cheering the teams on. He said: "Tens of thousands of British rugby fans are currently following their national team around France, enjoying the fantastic spectacle of the Rugby World Cup – my son and daughter-in-law among them! Even when our national teams are drawn up on opposite ends of the pitch, they do so with mutual admiration and a shared commitment to the rules of the game – on which I will say only ‘pas de coups bas, et que le meilleur gagne!’"

After the tennis match, Camilla and Mrs Macron joined a group of children in an inflatable boxing ring, where she hugged a few of them before they all posed for a picture. Camilla could be heard talking to the children and said "say cheese" before translating the word out loud and adding “fromage”. Camilla and Charles have been kept busy, as the king later visited a nearby coffee shop to speak with representatives from Objectif Emploi, which helps vulnerable young people find work. He greeted Parisian well-wishers who had waited in the rain for him. However, two people were escorted away by police officers after shouting as the King walked around the town square.

Camilla also went to support an important cause and heard from “brave” domestic abuse victims about their experiences. She acknowledged they had “been through hell." She and Brigitte Macron joined around 10 women in Saint Denis town hall, sitting with them in a circle. The Queen was clearly impressed with the work that was being done, telling Dr Hatem: “It’s so important. I think what you are doing here is perfect. We need to clone you.” She noted that there were “never enough places” for women who needed help but that it was “so important” that women keep going there to have “these wonderful conversations.” The Queen told the women: “You have all come through hell but now you have sorted out your lives and you can move forward.”
