Man Utd wonderkid agrees new contract after Erik ten Hag rejected transfer exit
Joe Hugill is set to sign a new and improved contract at Manchester United after the club warded off transfer interest in the striker.
Hugill, 19, has netted three goals and provided an assist from four Premier League 2 matches this campaign. He is earmarked for a senior career at the top level and United believe the Durham-native has the potential to forge a first-team spot at Old Trafford.
United paid Sunderland an eye-catching £300k fee to sign the striker, then aged 16, from Sunderland – fighting off competition from Premier League rivals Arsenal and Tottenham. He has impressed for the club’s youth teams and has risen to a starter for their de facto reserve side at Under-21 level.
Hugill was one of three Manchester United youngsters to join National League club Altrincham on loan in January, where he found the net once in ten appearances. He was part of United’s pre-season training camp with the first-team squad as overseen by Erik ten Hag.
United received transfer interest from a multitude of EFL clubs regarding a loan deal in the summer transfer window but Ten Hag requested that Hugill remain at the club so that his progress can be more closely monitored, and possibly to be involved in senior matchday squads.

The Red Devils do not have a lot of depth in the central striking position with Rasmus Hojlund and Anthony Martial, who has suffered from multiple injuries and fitness issues in recent seasons, the only senior options to call upon in that position – although Marcus Rashford can also deputise there.
It is believed that United may sanction a loan exit for Hugill in the January transfer window, with his former club Sunderland leading the list of admirers. His physical development at Under-21 level has given hope that he is ready for a prolonged run of matches at senior level.

The striker is one of a number of highly-rated attacking players who have excelled for United’s youth teams in recent years, with Omari Forson included in the first-team squad this season while Charlie McNeill joined Stevenage on loan. Alejandro Garnacho, Hannibal Mejbri and Kobbie Mainoo are youth-team products who have been embedded in Ten Hag’s first-team squad in the past year.
