Phil Spencer responds to Xbox leak claiming 'so much has changed'
After a number of Xbox leaks earlier this week, Xbox Boss Phil Spencer has responded in both a tweet and an internal memo which – as luck would have it – also leaked.
A massive Xbox leak earlier this week revealed a number of documents and emails relating to unannounced Bethesda titles, an Xbox Series X refresh, a new Xbox Wireless Controller, and even Phil Spencer's lofty aspirations for Microsoft to acquire Nintendo back in 2020. Understandably, the Xbox leak has sent waves through social media with everyone having their own opinion on these plans that were leaked (by none other than Microsoft itself we may add).
Now the main thing to keep in mind with these leaks is a lot of the info is from years ago – for example, the Nintendo emails were before Microsoft bought Bethesda, and years before the Microsoft Activision deal – so it's only reasonable to assume things have changed. That point seems to be the main thing Xbox boss Phil Spencer wants to get across, as he posted a Tweet addressing the Xbox leak, which said "It is hard to see our team's work shared in this way because so much has changed".
Phil Spencer also published an internal memo to the staff at Microsoft which ironically also leaked out via The Verge. The memo mainly goes over the sentiment that Spencer included in his Tweet that plans have changed saying "I know this is disappointing, even if many of the documents are well over a year old and our plans have evolved". While later addressing Microsoft being the source of the leak "I also know we all take the confidentiality of our plans and our partners’ information very seriously. This leak obviously is not us living up to that expectation. We will learn from what happened and be better going forward".
What's changed?
Phil Spencer's big sticking point in both of these statements is that things have changed since the documents were originally made. While he didn't mention any parts of the Xbox leak specifically one part that has undoubtedly changed is the idea of Xbox buying Nintendo – but not because of any change in attitudes in Xbox.
Why Star Wars Jedi: Survivor's six week delay is a good thing
As we mentioned above, In the time since those emails, Microsoft has bought Bethesda, and announced its intention to buy Activision Blizzard. Considering the huge amount of scrutiny from various government bodies and fellow members of the industry during the Microsoft Activision deal, surely Spencer realises an acquisition of that magnitude has no chance of happening now.
I have no doubt in my mind that there are people at Xbox who are still yearning to pick up the likes of Nintendo – and however many other companies they can scrape up – considering Microsoft's track record of buying companies to substitute investing in making games the way Sony or Nintendo does. The only thing that'll have changed there is that the team at Microsoft knows it wouldn't get an acquisition approved.
