Thomas Tuchel will not be in the dugout for Bayern Munich's Champions League opener against Manchester United because he is set to serve a one-match touchline ban.

Bayern take on Erik ten Hag's United at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday in what is poised to be a blockbuster affair between two giants of European football. It will be the first time the two sides have met in the Champions League since 2014 when they went head-to-head in the quarter-final.

On that occasion, Bayern ran out 3-1 winners - 4-2 on aggregate - to book their place in the last-four thanks to goals from Mario Mandzukic, Thomas Muller and Arjen Robben. The German champions will be aiming for a similar outcome this time around, although they are going to be without Tuchel on the sidelines.

Ex-Chelsea boss Tuchel will serve his one-game touchline ban against United after he was sent off during the quarter-final second-leg tie with Manchester City back in April. Bayern bowed out of Europe having been held to a 1-1 draw on the night, losing 4-1 on aggregate.

Tuchel was not happy with a coming together between Aymeric Laporte and Kingsley Coman and decided to lament his frustration at the referee. The ban has carried through the summer and into Bayern's next Champions League match, which has come against the Red Devils.

However, Tuchel will be in the stands and is allowed inside the dressing room and can communicate with his staff throughout the match. He will be keen to bounce back from Friday's 2-2 draw against fellow in-form Bayer Leverkusen as Bayern's 100 percent start came to an end.

£84.6million summer signing Harry Kane scored his fourth Bayern goal in four Bundesliga appearances in that game and he is looking forward to coming up against United once again. Kane's last appearance against Ten Hag's side was back in April when Tottenham and United drew 2-2.

"I know Manchester United are in a difficult moment, but sometimes teams like that are dangerous because they’re always looking to come back in a big way," Kane said.

"So we have to be prepared for them and of course we want to get the crowd behind us as early as possible on Wednesday. We are in front of our home crowd and will approach the game with a lot of intensity. The Champions League is always special and my first game with Bayern Munich will stay with me – so I hope it goes well."

Ex-Chelsea coach Anthony Barry will lead Bayern from the touchline and will work alongside fellow assistant Zsolt Low, who also worked under Tuchel at Stamford Bridge.
