Piers Morgan has slammed Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta for 'humiliating' Aaron Ramsdale by dropping him for the win over Everton.

Loanee David Raya instead started in goal, keeping a clean sheet as the Gunners secured their fourth win of the season. It was the news that Ramsdale had been benched that drew most of the attention before the game, with Raya coming in for his first appearance for Arsenal.

That was a decision Morgan vehemently disagreed with, with Ramsdale having been number one through all of last season. And the broadcaster has expressed his anger at Arteta for taking the England international out of the team in favour of Raya.

"I don’t understand what Ramsdale has done to deserve being dropped? Havertz, yes.. but Ramsdale’s been consistently superb for us. Why humiliate him? I don’t believe in having 2 top ‘keepers with neither knowing who’s No1," he tweeted.

"Nothing against Raya, who is very good, but don’t like the way Ramsdale’s being treated. Has any team ever won the League by rotating 2 top goalkeepers? I have no idea, but I doubt it."

Arteta was defensive of his decision to bench Ramsdale after the win, with his gamble paying off. He insisted that the level of quality of Ramsdale and Raya meant that both will be handed significant game-time this season.

"The same rationale that Fabio played here or that Eddie played ahead of Gabriel Jesus. I haven’t had a single question on why Gabriel hasn’t started - he has won more trophies including me in that dressing room but they don’t [ask why].

"It is something that historically is done like this but I cannot have two players in this position and not play them. David has tremendous qualities like Aaron has and Karl has, but we have to use them and it is like this.

"I am a really young manager, I have only had three and a half years in the job and I have few regrets. It was on two occasions, that after 60 minutes and at 85 minutes in two games in this period I could have changed the keeper in that moment, and I didn’t do it.

"I didn’t have the courage to do it. We drew those games and I was so unhappy. Someone is going to do it, and it’ll be strange and you’ll ask why, but tell me why not? If you have all the qualities in another goalkeeper to do something, then do it.

"There are games to do certain things and games to do other things that in my opinion were really important against Everton and we made the decision to try and benefit the team - that’s it."

Arsenal are next in action on Wednesday when they host PSV Eindhoven in he Champions League, before facing Tottenham in the North London Derby next weekend. Who starts between the sticks will be a major talking point between those games.
