Hero Gurkha who lost both legs over knee in Afghanistan explosion climbs Everest
Former Gurkha Hari Budha Magar made mountaineering history earlier this year when he climbed Mount Everest.
The army veteran, who is originally from Nepal and now lives in Canterbury, lost both his legs above the knee in an IED explosion in Afghanistan in 2010. Since then, the 43-year-old has taken on a number of challenges in his fight to change perceptions of what is possible for people with disabilities, and earlier this year became the first double amputee above the knee to climb Mount Everest.
Writing on his JustGiving page, Hari said: “If I had the opportunity to bring my legs back today, I would actually decline. It was only after losing them that I found my true self, the real Hari Budha Magar. That junction in my life has led me to where I am today. It has blessed me with encounters with some of the most inspirational and extraordinary souls on the planet and allowed me to discover my mission in life – to help others. My life has always been in service, whether to my family, community, military or disability.
The Pride of Britain awards 2023 is coming soon “There is a lot of work that needs to be done around disability, so I am dedicating the rest of my life to help raise awareness.” In a nod to the 8,894m height of Mount Everest, Hari has set a fundraising target of £884,900 in aid of five organisations – Gurkha Welfare Trust, BLESMA, Pilgrim Bandits, On Course Foundation and Team Forces.
Among Hari’s previous incredible achievements, he has climbed Ben Nevis, Mont Blanc, Kilimanjaro.
