Red Bull's dream of an unbeaten F1 season have died after Carlos Sainz produced a masterfully strategic performance to win the Singapore Grand Prix.

He led from start to finish – but that does not tell the whole story. The Ferrari driver had cars on his gearbox throughout the race and had to manage his pace and tyres perfectly in order to stay ahead.

And that's exactly what he did. Even when Mercedes gambled by pitting George Russell and Lewis Hamilton under a late safety car, Sainz had the rubber and the time in hand to keep those behind at arm's length.

Russell, pushing hard, crashed on the last lap to gift third place to Hamilton, behind Lando Norris. Charles Leclerc could manage only fourth place while Max Verstappen gave everything he could to rise to fifth.

Mirror Sport has documented all the main events from the race and all the key reaction in our live blog below:

Horner reacts as Red Bull record slips away

Red Bull were creeping closer and closer to becoming the first F1 team ever to go a full season unbeaten, but now that dream has died.

According to team principal Christian Horner, he never really believed it was going to be possible anyway.

He said: "We never expected it. I mean, there were still eight races to go. You guys have been asking me since pretty much [the second race in] Jeddah. To have got through 15 races is beyond our wildest imaginations.

"For Max to have now 10 in a row is insanity. The last time a driver did that was Sebastian [Vettel] in one of our cars --incredibly proud to have the first and second winningest drivers in Formula 1."

And the constructors' championship

That George Russell crash may prove costly for Mercedes by the end of the year, with Ferrari now closing in on the Silver Arrows:

  1. Red Bull Racing – 597
  2. Mercedes – 289
  3. Ferrari – 265
  4. Aston Martin – 217
  5. McLaren – 139
  6. Alpine – 81
  7. Williams – 21
  8. Haas – 12
  9. Alfa Romeo – 10
  10. AlphaTauri – 5

The drivers' championship standings

Even though Red Bull had a horrible weekend in Singapore, their drivers are still sitting pretty at the top of the standings:

  1. Max Verstappen – Red Bull – 374
  2. Sergio Perez – Red Bull – 223
  3. Lewis Hamilton – Mercedes – 180
  4. Fernando Alonso – Aston Martin – 170
  5. Carlos Sainz – Ferrari – 142
  6. Charles Leclerc – Ferrari – 123
  7. George Russell – Mercedes – 109
  8. Lando Norris – McLaren – 97
  9. Lance Stroll – Aston Martin – 47
  10. Pierre Gasly – Alpine – 45

Lawson focussed despite Singapore heroics

How about that drive from Liam Lawson... only a temporary driver while Daniel Ricciardo is out injured but he produced AlphaTauri's best result of the season.

Wolff urged to help "weaker child" in Hamilton vs Russell Mercedes F1 battleWolff urged to help "weaker child" in Hamilton vs Russell Mercedes F1 battle

After the race, though, the New Zealander was more focused on what went wrong! He said: "Honestly, when you're struggling for pace the race can be twice as hard because you're fighting the car the whole time, trying to maximise the tools that you have and get everything out of it. I guess we were trying to chase McLarens and we didn't have the speed to match them this weekend.

"But we kept out of trouble. The start was not good enough and I need to sort that, because that's two weekends in a row I've lost a couple of spots off the line and it just makes our lives more difficult. That's the target for the future if I'm back in the car.

"I'm just trying to maximise this. I have this short window to show something in Formula 1 and I'm trying to make the most of it. It's great, today was fantastic, but now my mindset is onto the next one, if I'm driving again."

More on that Perez penalty

"The stewards considered that this was an 'optimistic' late manoeuvre by the driver of Car 11, that it could be defined as 'diving in', and that there was nothing that the driver of Car 23 could have done to avoid the collision. Accordingly it is determined that the driver of Car 11 was predominantly to blame."

Sergio Perez hit with penalty

The day goes from bad to worse for Red Bull...

Sergio Perez has been given a five-second penalty after the race for causing a collision with Alex Albon.

It doesn't affect his final position as he was too far ahead of Liam Lawson and so keeps hold of eighth place.

But he also picks up a penalty point on his licence.

Sainz explains clever strategy after helping Norris

Carlos Sainz explained how he used Lando Norris to pull off a tactical masterclass to win the Singapore Grand Prix.

The Ferrari star became the first driver not behind the wheel of a Red Bull to taste victory this season. Starting on pole, he led from start to finish despite almost always having a car right on his gearbox.

For the second half of that race, that was Norris who is still hunting his first ever Formula 1 victory. Despite sticking close to the Ferrari, he never looked likely to make the overtake. And that, Sainz has explained, was by design. With the two Mercedes cars on fresher tyres and closing quickly, he was wary that George Russell and Lewis Hamilton were his biggest threats in the final 10 laps.

FULL STORY: Hamilton's regret

Lewis Hamilton was happy with his Singapore Grand Prix podium but was still left to rue his underwhelming qualifying result.

The seven-time world champion finished third behind winner Carlos Sainz and runner-up Lando Norris. He inherited that position from George Russell who, while pushing to catch the McLaren on the last lap, crashed out.

It was the result of a bold strategy call from Mercedes, pitting their drivers to lose places but give them fresher, faster tyres for the final stint. They had greater pace but just ran out of time to catch Sainz and Norris.

Third place and the extra point for the fastest lap was a satisfying result for Hamilton, who had started fifth on the grid. And he also enjoyed overtaking both Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez in the race, as Red Bull struggled as they had done all weekend.

Leclerc pleased to end Red Bull's streak

Charles Leclerc is delighted that Ferrari team-mate Carlos Sainz was able to become the first non-Red Bull driver to win a Grand Prix this season.

"It means a lot especially with all the hard work that has been done on a high downforce track," Leclerc told Sky Sports.

"It's amazing but of course I can't hide my disappointment because on my side I wish I had done a better result today."

FULL STORY: Russell fights back tears

George Russell said he felt like he had "let myself and the team down" after crashing on the last lap of the Singapore Grand Prix.

On fresh medium tyres after a Mercedes strategy gamble, he and Lewis Hamilton were hunting down the leaders in the late stages. They made light work of Charles Leclerc and were soon on the gearbox of Lando Norris.

On the final lap, Russell was giving everything he could to get past the McLaren. But he was pushing too hard and ended up clipping the wall on the inside of a corner. It meant he went straight on at that corner and buried the nose of his Mercedes in the barrier. He lost the podium and his chances of points as a result and Hamilton settled for third behind Norris and winner Carlos Sainz.

Hamilton hungry for more

Lewis Hamilton isn't fully satisfied, telling Sky Sports: "It's all in hindsight but I think, the thing I'm most disappointed with was that yes, George was so close to pole yesterday, I should've been on pole yesterday.

"But then, we had a good race. The race was kind of textbook. The team did a great job with the strategy. I'm in my element in the race, qualifying just needs to get better.

"George was great all weekend but I think as a team we risked it at the end and took the chance, and I love that the team is doing that. But it was a big gap to close up, it was definitely hard to overtake those guys at the end of the race. We probably needed another five or 10 laps and we'd have got them."

Sainz's gesture to Norris

"I think we should buy each other drinks," laughs Carlos Sainz to Sky Sports, acknowledging Lando Norris, who worked alongside him in order to secure their first and second-place finishes.

The pair are also former team-mates and share a good relationship.

Russell's three-word outburst

George Russell let out a guttural cry of anguish as he crashed out of the Singapore Grand Prix on the final lap.

The Brit was in the podium places in the late stages. And, thanks to a Mercedes tyre gamble late on, he was closing in on Lando Norris ahead of him and still held hope of catching the leader Carlos Sainz.

But his newer medium tyres started to go off at exactly the wrong moment. And, as the Brit pushed hard to catch Norris, he made a mistake and clipped the inside of a corner on the final lap.

It meant he went straight on and buried the nose of his Mercedes in the barrier, ending his race in heart-breaking fashion. His anguish was clear as he shouted over the radio: "Ahhhh! No! No!"

Russell speaks out after crash

George Russell has expressed his disappointment after crashing on the final lap, having been on for a third-place finish.

"No words, to be honest," a dejected Russell told Sky Sports. "Such a long and difficult race.

"Difficult to keep concentration when Carlos was doing a great job backing the pack up and not allowing us to do the alternative strategy. I think we were half a car's length from winning the race had I got past Lando when I had the opportunity.

"I think we'd have been able to get past Carlos. On the last lap, a millimetre's lapse in concentration and it's game over. I'm so sorry to the whole team."

Leclerc takes responsibility

Charles Leclerc has reacted to finishing fourth after hoping for a podium finish.

"I knew this this race would be difficult for me," Leclerc said. "So, I had to protect for Carlos. I struggled at the restart and with the tyres in general.

"I think it was good management. It was up to me yesterday to do a better job to be a good position."

McLaren reaction

McClaren managing director Zak Brown is delighted with Lando Norris' second-place finish and Oscar Piastri finishing seventh.

"We should continue to be strong, and next week, Oscar will get the package," Brown told Sky Sports. "So, we will continue to be strong."

More from Sainz

Carlos Sainz also said after his win: "It was all about keeping our limitations with tyre wear and degradation and all about managing the stints to make sure I made it to the target laps we wanted to do in each compound. Obviously a safety car caused us to pit even earlier than we wanted and I knew it was going to be a long stint on hard.

"I felt under control to be honest, I always felt like I had the head-space and the pace in hand to do whatever I wanted to do and I'm not going to lie you are under pressure obviously you are very close to making any kind of mistake but I felt under control and that I could manage well. We brought it home and that's the best feeling, I'm over the moon right now."

Russell's X-rated reaction

Toto Wolff is keeping coy on what George Russell said after crashing - but we know that it wasn't savoury.

"The things we heard on the radio, you can't say on telly," the Mercedes team principal told Sky Sports.

Russell still has his race helmet on as he mopes away from the track.

Verstappen's Singapore torment continues

Max Verstappen still hasn't won the Singapore Grand Prix, despite likely earning his third world championship come the end of the campaign.
