Dishwashers can be incredibly nifty for many reasons - they are not only safer because they make it less likely you'll drop something while cleaning by hand and accidentally cutting yourself, but they kill germs better by using really hot water.

Dishwashers are also known to be more water-efficient than washing up in the sink, potentially saving you some money, time and hassle. Recently, a hack has been swirling claiming to make your dishwasher even more efficient - but an appliance expert has warned against it, as it could be doing more harm than good. The hack claims to help make sure your dishes aren't wet when they come out of the dishwasher.

When the cleaning cycle is finished, people have been shutting the door with a tea towel in it, which apparently helps absorbing the moisture. However, Matt Ayres, Appliance Expert at RDO has said doing this could cause mould and bacteria to collect on the rubber seal on the inside of the door.

In order to keep this from happening, Matt recommends cleaning the seal thoroughly every few weeks, with a toothbrush and some soapy water - or mixing it with some white vinegar. Once you've done you need to dry it off with a paper towel to avoid moisture building up all over again.

According to the expert, while the hack will no doubt absorb some moisture in the dishwasher, which can give you dry dishes, it's not going to work for all of them. Instead, he recommends you leave space between your dishes to allow for proper air circulation when the cycle has ended.

Unless it's done automatically, you should also make sure to leave the dishwasher open at the end of its cycle to release the steam that has built up. If you do this, your dishes should dry by themselves naturally, so you don't have to do it by hand. Another tip is to make sure to keep your rinse aid topped up, as it helps promote drying and water drainage during the final rinse cycle.
