Peter Crouch has embarrassed himself live TV by falling over while attempting to hit the crossbar with a ball.

The former Liverpool striker scored 108 goals across a long professional career, but it seems his skills have faded since retirement. Crouch has established himself as top-tier pundit in recent years and was at Molineux on Saturday to work on TNT Sports' coverage of Wolves vs Liverpool in the Premier League.

Ahead of kick-off, Crouch and ex-England winger Joe Cole were tasked with kicking a ball from the edge of the box onto the crossbar. Cole went first and, although he missed the target, he retained his dignity.

Crouch, however, was a different matter. The 6ft 7in striker wandered up to the ball with confidence as presenter Lydnsey Hipgrave offered a supportive "Go on Crouchy!". Things went immediately downhill thereafter.

The 42-year-old's standing leg slipped on the Molineux turf as his not-football-appropriate trainers gave way in dramatic effect. Crouch ended up face down on the floor, with the microphone on his hand providing an amplified thud for the viewers at home.

He rolled onto his front and got to his feet with a gigantic grin on his face as Cole burst out laughing and Hipgrave said: "I knew someone was going to fall!" After sharing a supportive touch with Cole, Crouch said: "Who's made me do this, for god's sake?"

TNT Sports were quick to show a replay of the incident, providing a whole new angle for his embarrassment. Crouch later wrote on X: "Check your footwear today lads It’s slippy".

Crouch has developed a reputation as a joker and he is happy to be the butt of the joke on his football-focused podcast and the one with his wife, Abbey Clancy, but even he was embarrassed by this gaffe.

He has got used to brushing off jokes about his height, as he explained to Mirror Football in June around the Amazon documentary about his career.

“It’s been my defence mechanism really. There have been a lot of comments that people have laughed at. It’s been a lot of fun,” he said.

“Growing up it was because I looked different. If people were going to say something funny about me. If I was funny before they started, it put it to bed. It started as a defence mechanism but became my superpower.

“It ended up being something that makes me stand out from another footballer but it started in a place of people trying to give me a bit of stick but me being sharper and quicker than them about what they were going to say. That stood me in good stead and I wasn’t about to change that when I became a footballer.”
