Madeleine McCann cops 'warned months ago that flaky witness could collapse case'
German cops were told months ago they could sabotage the Madeleine McCann disappearance investigation by relying on one "flaky" witness, it has been reported.
The witness, Helge B, is an old friend of prime suspect Christian Brueckner and made a damning statement on the disappearance of the British girl who vanished in 2007 from Portugal, it has been reported. Following his statement, German cops thought they were on the verge of a breakthrough, but how German officers were told long ago about his "flakiness" after he threatened to pull help.
Sources previously said that the witness was "wobbling" and the case could fall apart as a result. Their reputation is now "shot to bits" and one source close to the investigation even revealed some Portuguese officers even nicknamed the star witness "Helge Bulls****er." Earlier this year there were renewed efforts to link convicted paedophile Brueckner to the alleged death of Madeleine. Helge previously said he saw Brueckner at a music festival in Spain in 2008 where they discussed the Madeleine McCann case and the suspect allegedly told him "She didn't scream". He told German outlet : "He asked me: ‘Don't you go to Portugal anymore and do business there?’"

They continued: "But he was discounted as a credible witness ages ago. He was always seen as a Walter Mitty character who would talk 'BS' all the time hence the nickname. They warned the Germans he was a bit of a fantasist and that he was 'flakey' and how he'd say what you wanted to hear. But, for some reason, the German detectives latched on to him. They’ve pinned pretty much their entire case on his evidence, despite being warned he wasn’t to be trusted. Now, with him looking to back out, their credibility has been totally shot to bits."
The source claimed that German cops have nowhere else to turn and without Helge's evidence it may be the end of the road. The source continued: "Word is that Helge B is about to withdraw his evidence. He was paid a huge sum to repeat his statement in a German newspaper and now he’s pulling the plug. It just goes to show you what type of people you are dealing with — and their credibility as witnesses."
Nicola Bulley police may be in breach of guidelines in search for missing mum
Earlier this summer investigators spent three days searching the surrounding area of the Arade dam and reservoir, about 30 miles from Praia da Luz and uncovered a "number of items" which could be linked to the case. Police were spotted removing what appeared to be large brown evidence bags from the search site. Brueckner has consistently denied any involvement in the abduction.
