Netflix banned from Ryder Cup access as golf stars put restrictions in place
The USA Ryder Cup team has voted to ban Netflix cameras from team meetings throughout the tournament.
Cameras are set to follow the team during the upcoming match against Europe due to take place in Rome, starting on September 29 until October 1, for the documentary show Full Swing. It was intended to give viewers a deeper understanding of the team dynamics as the US attempts to retain its title in the 44th edition of the match.
Cameras for the second series of the programme will be present at the Ryder Cup. However, team meetings will not be broadcast with a vote having been taken by the full side. Captain Zach Johnson said: "It was one of those where we all gathered. I talked to every individual and laid out scenarios.
"And they all felt like it was best to navigate that week of the tournament in a manner which the sanctity and sacredness of Team USA is preserved. We’re eliminating scenarios."
Seth Waugh, CEO of the PGA of America, added: "All things involving the team we leave to the team and the captain. I think there’s a sanctity to the team room, and the experience is important to them. It’s part of being a team, right?"

However, he has suggested that the Netflix access has been valuable and cameras will still be welcomed into other situations. He said: "Netflix has been great for the game. They’re doing great things. The team collectively decided there are areas of privacy that need to be respected."

Former World Number One Justin Thomas has also offered his view on the decision to ban cameras from the team meetings. He said: “I just think there was maybe a couple of people a little sceptical, and it really was not even a conversation. We're all a team this week. All 12 were on board, so it doesn't really matter.”
The latest iteration of the Ryder Cup represents the USA’s first opportunity to win the trophy on European soil since 1993. They were victorious last time out in the rearranged 2020 edition that took place in Wisconsin. They ended up winning 19-9.
Their 1993 victory also represented their last back-to-back win having also won in South Carolina two years previously. One man who will be aiming to play an important role in the USA is Brooks Koepk.
He is currently part of the controversial Saudi-backed LIV Tour. Netflix cameras previously had extensive access to players last year amid the fallout of the PGA Tour's bitter fallout due to the LIV Golf breakaway. The European team have not selected any players who currently play a part in LIV.
