Andre Onana has been blasted for yelling at Harry Maguire during Manchester United's pre-season clash with Borussia Dortmund back in July.
Maguire was jeered by Scotland fans during their defeat to England on Tuesday night, during which the defender scored an own-goal. The criticism Maguire has received for his call-up to the Three Lions led to Gareth Southgate slamming those who have taken aim at the United star.
But Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher does not believe it is only supporters who are to blame. Instead, he has singled out Onana for his public admonishment of Maguire during United's defeat to Dortmund in the keeper's second game for the Red Devils.
"One of the most distasteful incidents of all occurred during the friendly with Borussia Dortmund in July, when new signing Andre Onana started yelling at Maguire, in my view disgracefully playing to the gallery to endear himself to United fans," Carragher told The Telegraph.
"I watched that in disbelief, but it said everything about what has gone wrong. Maguire was still the club captain then. He should have reacted furiously, put Onana in his box and demanded respect.

"Instead, he has the persona of someone whose confidence and authority is utterly broken. He missed the opportunity to start landing a few punches when he turned down West Ham in the summer.

Andre Onana has been slammed for this incident in which he yelled at Harry Maguire during a pre-season match (ESPN)"David Moyes would have had the perfect manager in an ideal team for Maguire’s attributes. I am sure he would have been a success there. It is unfeasible for a centre-back to go into the next Euros when they have not been a regular for their club for two years."
Back when the incident occurred, Onana moved to play down his yelling at Maguire. The keeper insisted he had total respect for the defender and was merely demanding more from his team-mates.
"I demand a lot of my teammates because also they demand a lot, they trust in me. They play a lot of balls back to me, so I have to give them confidence and I want my players to give them to me to give me confidence," he told MUTV.
"I demand [from] them a lot and I will demand from them a lot because they are great players. Now, for me, it's a big honour to play with these defenders. With [Lisandro] Martinez, Harry [Maguire] they are doing great things.
"They are important players for the club. I'm very happy to be part of this team and playing with them is something great. I try to talk to them a lot because I know he's a good player, he is one of the captains of the team.
"That’s big and he is good with the ball, so I would demand [from] him a lot and he’s a good, great guy. I have a good relationship with him. I have to be and he has to be ready and I spoke with him because when I'm in the goal, I demand to everyone a lot."
