Man Utd's Sancho strategy fails as club announces mammoth sponsor deal

Manchester United have had an eventful international break as they deal with problems off the field.

Brazilian winger Antony has been given an extended leave whilst he deals with an ongoing police investigation. Erik ten Hag is also having to deal with noise around Jadon Sancho, who publicly took on the coach with a social media post following their defeat to Arsenal.

United have won two and lost two of their opening four games with several concerns being aired around the style and make-up of the team. Ten Hag wants to build on his impressive debut season, but has not got off to the ideal start ahead of the Premier League's return this weekend. Here's the latest from the red side of Manchester.

Sancho strategy failed

United attempted to combat Sancho's poor timekeeping at Old Trafford by giving him a unique schedule that was designed to make him turn up an hour earlier than planned. The winger's lateness was becoming an issue and Ten Hag sought solutions.

He designed a guide that asked Sancho to turn up 60 minutes before his team-mates were scheduled to do so, which initially led to a change in his behaviour. Eventually, though the player fell back into bad habits, as per the Athletic.

Sancho and his manager have been involved in a verbal war that began with Ten Hag citing poor training form as the reason behind not selecting the player. The Englishman hit back on social media, pinning his views on his X account, but has now removed it.

New shirt sponsor announced

United have announced Snapdragon as their new front-of-shirt sponsor from the start of next season after reaching a deal with Qualcomm.

Their TeamViewer deal will be replaced with the Snapdragon logo going on their home, away and third kits for both the men's and the women's teams. In a statement to investors, United have not specified the length of the deal or financial terms but it has reportedly been valued at £65million per season.

A press release from the club read: "Manchester United PLC has agreed to an expanded strategic collaboration with Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., that will see the Snapdragon brand displayed on the club’s famous shirts."

Onana's AFCON blow

Andre Onana helped Cameroon qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) - but will be absent for a number of games later this season as a result.

The United goalkeeper reversed his international retirement last month and returned to action in their 3-0 AFCON qualifying victory over Burundi. It means Onana will be in action in the continent's tournament which will be held in the Ivory Coast between January 13 and February 11 next year

As a result, Ten Hag will have to turn to new signing Altay Bayindir, who joined for £4.3m from Fenerbahce. During the period of Onana's absence, the Red Devils could play four league games, two FA Cup games, two Carabao Cup games and a potential Champions League knockout contest.
