The 10-year-old boy who died after he received an electric shock in a hotel lobby has been named.

Jack Piper-Sheach, from Wales, was in a critical condition in hospital for four days after being found unresponsive at Tiffany's Hotel in Blackpool, Lancashire, last weekend. His devastated family were at his bedside when he died on Thursday.

Emergency services were called out at around 10.40pm last Sunday following the incident in the reception area of the hotel. Lancashire Police said that the boy was not responding when when the 999 call was made and his injuries suggest a "high voltage" of electricity was involved. The hotel has voluntarily closed its doors and that it is co-operating with police and council enquiries.

Coroner Alan Wilson has now confirmed that an inquest into his death at Blackpool and Fylde Coroner’s Court will open on Friday (September 15). After initial enquiries, the Lancashire Police handed their investigation into the incident to Blackpool Council. And the local authority advised the Tiffany’s Hotel to temporarily close while it undertakes health and safety investigations.

A spokesperson for Blackpool Council said: “The investigation is still ongoing and at this stage. We are unable to predict when the hotel will be able to reopen. We are carrying out the investigation and officers from the Health and Safety Executive have been offering specialist support.”

Following news of Jack’s tragic passing, a spokesperson for the Tiffany's Hotel said they were “heartbroken”. They said: “We are heartbroken by the news we have received today and our thoughts and prayers remain with the family at this distressing time. We will continue to provide the relevant authorities any assistance they need to carry out their investigations.”

In a statement Lancashire Constabulary said: "A boy has sadly died following an incident at a Blackpool hotel. We were called to the Promenade, Blackpool, at 10.39pm on Sunday to reports a 10-year-old boy had been found unresponsive inside a hotel. He was taken to hospital with injuries consistent with coming into contact with a high voltage of electricity and very sadly died in hospital yesterday, Thursday, September 7. His family were by his bedside and our thoughts are with them at this time. Following an initial police investigation this matter has now been passed to the local authority. A file will be prepared for HM Coroner."

A spokesman for the hotel said: "We are deeply saddened by this recent incident involving a child who has received a shock on Sunday evening within our reception lounge area. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the child and their family during this distressing time. We want to reassure everybody that the health and safety of our guests and team remains our number one priority.

"We have taken the decision to voluntarily close temporarily whilst we undertake our own inspections. Our phone lines do remain open and we are working very closely with the Blackpool Council and the local enforcement to assist in their investigation."

A Blackpool Council spokesperson said: "We have been informed of the tragic death of a young boy following an incident at Tiffany's Hotel. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this sad time. Our investigation is now under way and following our advice the owner of the hotel has agreed to a voluntary closure."
