Simon Cowell has expressed his delight at the positive feedback that he has received worldwide from speaking about his mental health to The Mirror.
Cowell revealed that many close friends were shocked about his admission of dark times and needing therapy during his appearance on the Men In Mind podcast with The Mirror's Tom Bryant. The media mogul made global headlines for his candour on mental welfare after years of bottling up his insecurities.
On Tuesday night on the America’s Got Talent red carpet, Cowell exclusively told The Mirror about the positive feedback he's had since opening up. Cowell, 62, said: “I did it because I think there's a lot of people like myself who I certainly used to be this way embarrassed about saying, I need to see a therapist, or I'm feeling vulnerable, or I'm feeling this and that.
“And because I felt that way, and then I decided to go and see a therapist, and I felt the difference afterwards, I thought, well, if it helped me so much, then I want to say to a lot of people, don't be afraid of it.
Simon spoke about therapy and his mental health“It is nothing to be embarrassed about. It's not a weakness, it's just go with it. And if you could do the same for me as it would to others, then that's what it was all about. But yeah, I have a lot of people who say, like you said, you're surprised you did it, but at the same time it was a good thing to do. And I'm going to do more of that, by the way, “

Cowell confessed how he wished he had started therapy 20 years earlier after suffering from depression and not seeking help on the new Men in Mind podcast Cowell said: “When I see my friends, the first thing I talk about is how therapy has had this super positive effect on my life."

Simon spoke about mental health on a new podcast (FilmMagic)Simon told journalist Tom Bryant: “I wish I had done this 10 or 20 years ago... it’s like a weight has lifted off my shoulders. I’ve suffered from depression over the years... but that was just something I just thought, ‘Well, that’s my character trait. I get down,’ and it’s something you deal with.”
Cowell also spoke to US TV show Extra on Tuesday night as a follow up to Men In Mind. He explained that going to therapy has had many benefits on different aspects of his life, including his relationship with finance Lauren Silverman.
“It has been good for both of us," he said on the show. "In fact, we did do this thing where both of us go in… There was one point when we were together and I looked at the two therapists and their faces were like… and when we got out, we both cracked up and said, ‘God, what must they be thinking?’
“Then I spoke to my therapist afterwards and he said, ‘Honestly, Simon, that was nothing,’ but it is healthy to go somewhere and let it all out.”
America’s Got Talent airs Tuesday and Wednesday night at 8pm on local time zones.
