Friends left mortified at 'perfect' birthday party after making simple mistake

It's always fun to plan a party for one of your pals, especially if they've got a big birthday coming up. But what would you do if you realised that you were one year too early for their milestone? You'd likely be seriously embarrassed - and one group of women were just that, as their trip to Liverpool descended into hilarity.

Sally Anne Ashford, 59, was left creasing with laughter after her best friends set up a huge surprise at the Mercure hotel in Liverpool, including bubbly on ice, a tiara, and banners that read '60 and fabulous' - when she wasn't even turning that age.

The trio had hoped Sally would have a landmark birthday to remember - until their bestie pointed out that she'd actually only just turned 59.

And when Sally enters the room her reaction is priceless, and the girls can't believe their ears when she says: "Whose is that? Me? That's not until next year!" The room then erupts in laughter as the ladies laugh about the mistake as the realisation sets in.

Carmen Atherton, 61, Ali Thomas, 58, and Elizabeth, 49 set up the surprise during a girls' weekend to the city. Sally, an administrator from Great Wyrley, South Staffordshire, posted the hilarious moment online, and the friends couldn't believe it when it garnered over a million views. "It was even more hilarious because Elizabeth is 50 next year and I am 60 and we have had that conversation", she said.

"They called me into the room to have a drink before we all went out, and there it all was. It was so funny we couldn't stop laughing. I'm not really one for social media, and we only put it on there for a joke, but I can see why people like the video because it's such a funny, genuine moment. All the lads I work with have been in hysterics about it."

As part of their trip to Liverpool they rode on the Mersey Ferry, took the Beatles Magical Mystery Tour, and visited the artisan market at the Albert Docks - but the highlight of the trip for these pals will be the hilarious birthday slip-up. "At least I know what to expect next year", Sally joked.
