Andy Robertson's instant response to blunder vs England sums up Liverpool star

Andy Robertson has said he instantly apologised to his Scotland team-mates after costing his team a goal in their defeat against England at Hampden Park, before attempting to make a positive impact in the second half of the game.

Steve Clarke's side were 1-0 down through a Phil Foden goal when a Robertson error hurt the hosts further. He failed to clear his lines, presenting the ball straight to Jude Bellingham just 12 yards from goal, and the Real Madrid star doubled England's advantage.

Liverpool defender Robertson doesn't make too many mistakes, but this one - while captaining his country - clearly hurt, based on his reaction. Even so, the former Hull man showed he is not one to hide away after such an error.

"The second goal is completely my fault,' Robertson told beIN SPORTS. "Obviously that can't happen, but you take it on the chin and try and react and in the second half we got ourselves back in the game.

"I hate letting this team down and that's what I felt I did today," he added. "I hate costing goals and it was just that I didn't quite expect the ball to land at my feet and it has just fallen to him, and when you're coming up against Bellingham with the form he's in, he's not going to let you get away with it.

"I had to apologise to the team and the manager. I did that and I just tried to have a positive reaction in the second half and I thought I've done that but tonight I'll obviously be kicking myself."

Scotland came back into the game in the second half, with Robertson playing a part in their goal. His cross was inadvertently turned into the visitors' net by Harry Maguire, while further Robertson deliveries brought chances for Lyndon Dykes and John McGinn.

Not only did Robertson apologise with his words, but he attempted to make up for it on the pitch. And this is something he'll want to show he can build on for club and country.

Liverpool return to Premier League action with a trip to Wolves on Saturday, followed by a Europa League opener against LASK. For Scotland, though, the stakes will be very high in the October international break.

A draw in one of Tuesday's other games between Norway and Georgia would have sent Scotland through to Euro 2024 with three games to spare, but Norway secured a 2-1 victory in Oslo. One more win would be enough for Clarke's men, though, with their next qualifier coming away to Spain.

England are also close to confirming their spot at the Euros despite only drawing with Ukraine on Saturday. Gareth Southgate's team are six points clear at the top of their group, and host Italy in October.
