A British man has been charged with killing a Canadian businessman after a brawl.

Craig Gibson, 28, whose home town has not been shared but is from the UK, has been charged with second-degree murder after the death of 38-year-old Canadian businessman, Brett Sheffield.

Canadian police say they responded to an incident at a bar in downtown Toronto at around 11.30pm. On arrival, they found the victim had sustained life-threatening injuries. Paramedics rushed him to a nearby hospital, but doctors were unable to save him and he died two days later, it has been reported.

Images captured at the scene showed police vehicles stationed outside Laissez Faire, a restaurant in the city centre.

Local media has reported that Gibson fled the scene after the brawl, but that officers picked him up a short while later. Gibson was hauled in to a Toronto court yesterday for a bail hearing, but the ruling of the hearing is yet to be made public.

The statement read: "Brett Sheffield, founder of NextGen Drainage Solutions, passed away on August 30 due to a random act of violence. His absence is felt deeply across the community, our company, and his vast network of friends and colleagues."

"Brett’s passion for helping every person feel valued and cared for, will continue to motivate us. We are finding comfort in our shared commitment to ensuring Brett’s legacy thrives. We appreciate your concern and patience as we support Brett’s family," the statement added.

Sheffield's LinkedIn page says that he is the owner of multiple businesses, having set up NextGen in 2011. His other firms include a farm and a gym. In 2014, he graduated from Ohio State University.

In a post on Facebook, a friend shared his grief over the death of "one of the best guys I have ever known". The friend said: "One of the best guys I have ever known. He will be deeply missed by so many people. Still can’t believe that it’s actually true. Still waiting for that daily text to come through from you. Gonna miss you so much! Love you Brett!"

Another pal added: "He was such an awesome kid, always treating me and everyone around him with the outmost respect. He surely will be missed."

A third said: "We always had big plans, I guess gods was just a little bigger this time. Hopefully there’s an abundance of acres up there needing tile drainage, rest easy pal we’re gonna miss you."
