Man Utd accused of 'incompetence' as embarrassing Hojlund gaffe comes to light

Manchester United fans were unable to buy shirts with new signing Rasmus Hojlund's name on the back for over a month due to an embarrassing gaffe.

United signed Hojlund from Atalanta this summer in a deal worth up to £72m. However, fans wanting to get a replica kit with their new star striker's name on it were left disappointed as the Old Trafford Megastore did not have the right Danish 'ø' in stock.

Hojlund officially joined United on August 5, with the 20-year-old presented to supporters at Old Trafford ahead of a pre-season friendly against Ligue 1 side Lens. However, the forward was nursing a back injury when he signed and was unable to make his debut until September 3 when he came off the bench in the 3-1 loss to Arsenal at the Emirates.

And six weeks after Hojlund became a United player, fans can now finally get his name on their shirts with the Daily Mail reporting that the "unique o" they were missing arrived on Thursday and the shirts are now on sale.

However, the club have been blasted as 'incompetent' for their failure to sell replica Hojlund shirts earlier. One fan, who was hoping to buy one as a birthday present for a family member, fumed: "It's incompetence. The big summer signing and you still can’t get a shirt with his name on it because nobody saw fit to get the Danish 'ø'."

Due to Hojlund's injury, United did not announce his shirt number when he signed either, instead waiting almost a month to give him the No11 on the eve of his debut against the Gunners.

Although Hojlund has only made brief appearance for United so far, Red Devils captain Bruno Fernandes has been impressed by his start to life at Old Trafford. "He's someone who is always trying to speak to everyone, he is a kid that what I have seen until now who obviously wants to work he wants to get into the team," he said.

"He wants to be fit as soon as possible and I think he will bring us a lot of energy, a lot of strength and hopefully a lot goals too. I want to build that connection with him, as well as building that connection with the other wingers and the other strikers because I've always said I'm here and everyone behind them is here to serve them.

"We want them to feel happy, to feel that the ball is coming they will get their chances and obviously it’s about them getting their goals and that’s what we want." United boss Erik ten Hag, meanwhile, was impressed by Hojlund's impact off the bench against Arsenal.

"I think he played very good," the Dutchman said. "But also I think Anthony Martial's was a very good performance, so I was pleased and definitely, I think Rasmus Hojlund had [a] very good impact on the game."
