Glazers' Man Utd debts exceed £1bn as Antony gets leave of absence

Manchester United's start to the season has certainly been eventful as they deal with problems on and off the field.

They've won two and lost two heading into the international break but Erik ten Hag is dealing with issues regarding Jadon Sancho and Antony. The former has challenged the coach on social media whilst the Brazilian is in the midst of a police investigation.

The Glazers meanwhile continue to court attention as the potential takeover of the club begins to stall. Their lack of communication regarding their plans for the future are resulting in mounting frustration.

Here's the latest news from the red half of Manchester.

Debts reach new high

The Red Devils are now in more than £1billion of debt as the club's future under the Glazers' ownership continues to be far from certain.

The Americans have been at the helm for the best part of 20 years but remain immensely unpopular and are unwilling to put their own money into the club, which has seen them fall behind several of their rivals. Back in November 2022, they were put up for sale as the Glazers sought a rumoured £6billion asking price.

The issue of United's outstanding debt remains an issue amid suggestions they will take the club off the market. According to the Daily Mail, the money owed by the club has now surpassed the £1bn threshold.

Antony told to stay away

Manchester United have confirmed that Antony will be taking a "leave of absence" while he faces allegations of physical assault, which he denies.

Antony released a statement reading: “I have agreed with Manchester United to take a period of absence while I address the allegations made against me. This was a mutual decision to avoid distraction to my teammates and unnecessary controversy for the club.

“I want to reiterate my innocence of the things I have been accused of, and I will fully cooperate with the police to help them reach the truth. I look forward to returning to play as soon as possible.”

Antony was withdrawn from the Brazil squad in the light of these allegations and it has now been confirmed by the club that he will stay away from Manchester United until further notice.

Hojlund's brothers tipped to make impact

Rasmus Hojlund cost the Red Devils £72million this summer - but he wasn't considered a 'standout talent' until recently.

In fact, Hojlund's two younger brothers were tipped for bigger and better things than the new man at Old Trafford and the family will square off later this season. Twins Emil and Oscar, 18, both play for Danish giants Copenhagen, where Rasmus previously came through the ranks before making the move to Austrian side Strum Graz, eventually finding his way to Manchester via Atalanta.

According to Christian Mouroux, sporting director at the brothers' local amateur club, Horsholm Usserod Idraetsklub (HUI) claims that it was the younger pair who stood out. "His two younger brothers - twins Emil and Oscar - were more obvious talents," Mouroux said.
