Brock Purdy responded to a prediction made by an upcoming opponent ahead of the new NFL season.

The San Francisco 49ers will commence their campaign against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday night at Acrisure Stadium. Patrick Peterson, who plays as a cornerback on the AFC North team claimed he would intercept a pass from Purdy, 23, because the 49ers have pre-snap giveaways. "There is some tell signs out there that tells us what plays we're gonna get from those guys in certain situations," Peterson said on the All Things Covered podcast. "When I get my pick Sunday, we'll talk about it."

Peterson has 34 career interceptions, including five last season with Minnesota. Purdy, meanwhile, has thrown two total INTs in his eight career starts. Responding to the 33-year-old’s comments, Purdy showed his respect to the eight-time Pro Bowl star and was keen to let his ability do the talking on the field.

“Yeah, I mean, I don’t really know what to say about that,” he said during a press conference. “Patrick Peterson’s a great player. I grew up watching him. I was obviously from Arizona and he played for the Cardinals. So, yeah, it’s the competitive nature, I guess, of football. So we’ll see.” During the NFC Championship game against the Philadelphia Eagles on Jan. 29, Purdy injured his right elbow and left the field, and was replaced by Josh Johnson.

After Johnson suffered a concussion in the third quarter Purdy re-entered the game; due to his injury, he was compromised and was primarily tasked with just handing the ball to his teammates. Due to the seriousness of the injury, there were doubts about whether Purdy would be ready for the start of the upcoming season.

But he returned to training sooner than expected and is now ready to lead the 49ers at the start of the new campaign. “I’m so thankful to be able to go through what I’ve done in terms of the rehab and have all the help I’ve had with all the physical therapists, my surgeon the strength and conditioning staff and everyone here,” he added.

“The medical staff with the Niners, they’ve all played a huge role, it wasn't just me. I had a lot of help and I’m very thankful for everyone that played a part in that. It was somewhat of a long six months but at the same time, it feels like that Eagles game was just yesterday.

“So here we are getting ready for game one and I’m really excited about it.” One player who also expects to play is defensive end Nick Bosa after he signed a record-setting five-year, $170 million contract extension that includes $122.5 million in guarantees on Friday morning.

He held out on a deal with the 49ers for 44 days and now Bosa is the highest-paid defensive player in NFL history. Bosa played a limited role in practice on Thursday and was listed as a full participant in the team’s half-speed session on Friday.

On Wednesday, Niners coach Kyle Shanahan indicated he expected Bosa to play Sunday and the franchise was impressed with how he returned after not training with the team for a long period. "He looked exactly how we were expecting him to look," Shanahan said. "Looks in real good shape. Looks ready to go. We got an idea how we're going to use him and I think he'll do all right."
