The Met Office has issued a wave of weather warnings as many parts of the UK face a battering from thunder storms as the heatwave continues to push temperatures above 30C in some areas.
Eight warnings have been issued: for the East Midlands, North East England, North West England, Yorkshire and Humber, Wales, central Scotland, Tayside and Fife, Northern Ireland and the Dumfries, Galloway, Lothian & Borders areas of Scotland. The warnings are in place from 2pm on Sun 10 Sep 2023 and midnight.
Thunderstorms may bring disruption during Sunday afternoon and evening, forecasters have warned. "Flooding of homes and businesses could happen quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds," the Met Office warning stated. Residents are also being warned that flooding and lightning strikes could severely disrupt travel with rail and bus routes potentially closed.

Sever flooding could see some areas cut off and power outages could also impact residents, the forecaster said. "Fast flowing or deep floodwater is possible, causing a danger to life," they added.
The warnings come as the UK basks in record heat, with the the hottest day of the year so far recorded on Thursday with 32.6C (91F) recorded in Wisley, Surrey. Forecasts for today say the localised thunderstorms will batter the north of England and Scotland and Northern Ireland while the south will remain hot.

It is possible temperatures could climb even higher today, setting a new record for the year, with forecasters calling for 31 or 32 in some areas. Meanwhile today there are yellow warnings for thunderstorms covering and area including Manchester, Hull, Stoke-on-Trent, Nottingham, Peterborough, Birmingham and Oxford. Residents here have been warned heavy showers and thunderstorms are possible, perhaps leading to some disruption.
