Were Rishi Sunak not a teetotaller you would wonder what he has been drinking.

The Prime Minister claims that he is entirely confident he can lead the Conservatives to victory in the next general election. He also hinted that he may delay the poll until the last possible moment, which would involve going to the country in January 2025. The Tories have overstayed their welcome. Every day they cling on in office, the more desperate voters will be to call in the bailiffs.

Voters will have surveyed the past 13 years and rightly asked how have lives improved since the Conservatives came to power. NHS waiting lists are at a record high, schools are crumbling, crime goes undetected, the roads are pockmarked with potholes, local services are cut to the bone and the tax burden is at its highest since Second World War. This is a government that has run out of steam, out of ideas and out of room. Mr Sunak should call an election now, not inflict another 12 months of misery on the nation.

Vets fail pets

A nation of animal lovers is finding it increasingly difficult to cover the costs of looking after their pets. This week a probe was launched into the vet industry, amid growing complaints about the eye-watering fees being charged. Veterinary surgeons warn that the sector is in crisis because of low pay and staff shortages.

Independent practices accounted for 89% of the industry 10 years ago. That has now fallen to 45%, with more than half of country’s vets owned by just six companies. The type of firm in All Creatures Great and Small has been muscled out by greedy corporates more interested in the bottom line than providing caring services at affordable prices.

It’s a high five

Baking Britain has recorded five consecutive days of 30C temperatures in September for the first time. Many will be enjoying the Indian summer but others will be praying for Cool Britannia.
