The lifeless body of a missing young man was found days after he disappeared and weeks after starting a new job as a software engineer at Netflix. Yohanes Stefanos Kidane, 22, was pulled out of San Francisco Bay near the Golden Gate Bridge in California.

His remains were in an advanced state of decomposition, police said, making identification difficult. Mr Kidane was last seen getting into a car with an Uber sticker, and his belongings were found at the scene.

After a forensic examination, it was determined that his cause of death was blunt impact injuries with drowning as a significant contributing factor, and his death was ruled as suicide. Police had previously found no evidence of foul play in his disappearance.

The sheriff's office said: "The remains exhibited signs of advanced decomposition, prolonged exposure to the aquatic environment and appreciable depredation. The subject’s remains were unidentifiable and unknown at the time of his death pronouncement without any identification located upon his person."

Kidane's disappearance had raised concerns, as he was last seen getting into a car with an Uber sticker, suggesting he might have used a rideshare service. Some of his personal belongings were found at the scene, deepening the mystery of his disappearance.

On August 31, the body was positively identified as Yohanes Stefanos Kidane. A forensic postmortem examination conducted later determined the exact cause of death. Officials said: "The cause of death was determined to be from blunt impact injuries with drowning as a significant contributing condition. The mode of death was determined to be suicide."

Previously, a missing person's poster said that Mr Kidane's cell phone, wallet and backpack were found near the Golden Gate Bridge Welcome Center in San Francisco. The location on his phone also confirmed that he had spent most of Monday night by the bridge.

Mr Kidane’s brother, Yosief, had said at the time: "Two young colleagues of his saw him and were able to talk to him. He said he was heading to San Francisco to maybe meet a friend. The last footage I’ve seen of him was leaving his apartment building and getting into a black Toyota Camry."

His mother, Mehret Hana Beyene says that her husband and oldest son flew from New York to San Francisco to look for the younger son in the Bay Area.
