Southgate's rousing speech to England players ahead of Euro qualifiers

Gareth Southgate has told his England players: We WILL win next summer’s Euros.

Southgate delivered the rabble-rousing speech after the squad got together this week ahead of their qualifier with Ukraine in Poland on Saturday.

Three Lions boss Southgate is determined to instill a winning mentality in his players ahead of the tournament after recent near misses.

England reached the semi finals in the 2018 World Cup, the final of the last Euros and crashed out to France in last year’s World Cup in Qatar. Southgate’s contract expires after the Euros next year and this is likely to be his last crack at winning a major tournament.

Brighton captain Lewis Dunk revealed the change in mindset in the England set-up since he was last in the squad in 2018 and also the powerful message which Southgate delivered to his players at St George’s Park.

Dunk said: “We had a meeting the other day and he’s talking about winning the Euros and the whole squad is thinking about winning the Euros so I would say that’s the big change in mentality.

“It’s not 'How far can we get in a tournament.’ It’s winning a tournament. So that is probably the biggest change I’ve seen coming back. It’s: ‘We will win this tournament. We want to win this tournament.’ That’s what we’re going there to do.

“Of course it gives you confidence. And being around these top players. I can see why he is saying that and why England can win.

“You see over the past tournaments, the progress there has been. I’ve been watching from home and seeing the progress, it’s been incredible – as a fan of England.

“I think it’s progress that has kept going and now I think it’s got to hopefully be time when one of these days we do win one. Again!

“I come up against them all the time. Week in, week out. I know what sort of players they are – when you see them on the training field, you know how good some of the talents are in this group. We’ve got a real good squad together and have a real good chance.”
