Baldur's Gate 3 crossplay confirmed by studio director

Baldur's Gate 3 only has co-op available between the same platform right now but crossplay has finally been confirmed for the title by Larian Studios' Director of Publishing

Keeping with the spirit of Dungeons and Dragons, Baldur's Gate 3's campaign is fully playable in co-op with a party of four players, but sadly the Baldur's Gate 3 cross-platform situation is restricted to cross-save alone, so PC players can't play with PS5 players, who won't be able to play with Xbox players when that version launches later this year. That means your full party will have to be limited to the same platform if you want to go on the adventure together. At least that's the case for now.

However, that won't be the case forever. Despite having no news about it before the launch of the game, Baldur's Gate 3 crossplay is now confirmed to be in the works. Larian Studios' Director of Publishing Michael Douse spoke to Eurogamer's Robert Purchese and revealed that Baldur's Gate 3 crossplay was "always in the planning". Douse clarified "But we knew it wouldn't be for launch. It's in the roadmap, and though we have an idea of when we'd like to get it ready, we don't want to put a date on it until we're sure", which explains why nothing was announced before the launch of the game.

Considering the team is likely focused on getting an Xbox Series X|S version of the game out before worrying about crossplay, I wouldn't expect it to make it into the game before 2024, but at least that'll give you an excuse to jump back into 2023's highest rated game next year. Although I could be wrong, I certainly didn't expect the Xbox version to be out between September and November as Larian has claimed.

Roll for crossplay

We're rapidly approaching the point where a game not having crossplay at launch is a shocker, which is weird to think considering six years ago Sony was out there making excuses to not have Minecraft crossplay (citing safety concerns to Eurogamer ). So knowing that Larian Studios was aware of this is good news.

Hopefully, potential crossplay will also be workable on Xbox Series S, considering that version is cutting back features (such as split-screen co-op) due to technical difficulties, it would be very disappointing if crossplay turns out to be another casualty of the Xbox Series S version.
