Lucy Letby is a "psychopath" who has "pretended to be human all her life" according to a leading criminal psychologist, who fears she would never have stopped her evil killing spree.

Dr David Holmes says the twisted nurse has been acting - but wasn't "born" to kill babies. The cowardly murderer, who skipped her own sentencing and evaded the victim impact statements from distraught parents, will die in prison as one of Britain's most prolific female serial killers.

The 33-year-old nurse targeted babies between June 2015 and June 2016 at the Countess of Chester Hospital, force-feeding infants milk, poisoning them with insulin or injecting them with air. The crime expert has now given some insight into Letby's mind and what might have motivated her to commit her barbaric crimes.

Dr Holmes says it’s likely Letby went through life “manipulating people by playing a very nice person” - finding purpose and power in her controlling nature within her nursing role. “Often psychopaths gravitate to one uniform or another and many do go into the medical profession,” he explains to new magazine. “I believe she was born with the brain configuration of a psychopath.

“Her idea of pushing little babies to the brink of death and then saving them, or looking as if she’s there at the last moment doing her best to save them, is all just creating a theatrical scenario where she’s playing the hero.”

Chillingly, he also believes that if she hadn’t been caught her crimes would have escalated. He added: “She would have carried on. She would have needed more and more of this kind of excitement and involvement. This is usually how these sorts of people get caught. We’ve had ones in the past – it took a very long time for Harold Shipman to be caught.”

The horrifying nature of Letby's crimes led to her being handed a whole-life order - a very rare sentence given to only three other women in Britain before her. This order means she has no hope whatsoever of ever getting out and resuming her old life, and will die behind bars.

Letby will reportedly serve out her days at HMP Low Newton, a maximum security prison near Durham that houses a number of dangerous criminals, including fellow serial killer Joanna Dennehy. It's believed that Letby could potentially be transferred to a lower security prison to live out her final days later on in life, but it's expected she'll remain a maximum-security prisoner for at least the next 20 years. For now, Letby will have to adjust to life behind bars, and experts believe she could be looking at a rather solitary existence.
