Full list of schools affected by RAAC concrete crisis finally published

A full list of schools hit by full or partial closure has FINALLY been released - after days of misery for parents and heads.

Fears over crumbling concrete forced the Government to order more than 100 schools to shut or close off parts of their buildings only days before the start of term. Another 50 schools had already been told to make repairs. Up to this point ministers have refused to release a full list, leaving headteachers and parents in the dark as they scrambled to get children back in the classroom on time.

Moments before Prime Minister's Questions, the Government slipped out the full list of schools impacted. The long-awaited document included details for 147 education settings in England where mitigations had to be put in place to deal with collapse-prone concrete. Pupils at 24 schools will receive some remote learning because of the concrete crisis, including four schools switching to fully remote learning. Another 19 schools had to delay the start of term.

Liberal Democrat Education Spokesperson Munira Wilson said: “The Conservative government should never have taken this long to publish this list, while parents were plunged into uncertainty over whether their child’s school is safe. Rishi Sunak must now come clean over his own role in this crisis, and publish the full evidence that officials provided to him as Chancellor on the risks to children’s safety from crumbling school buildings. Sunak and his Conservative ministers have ducked responsibility and blamed everyone but themselves for this fiasco. Families deserve to know the truth instead of this endless smoke and mirrors.”

Rishi Sunak is under intense pressure over the failure to strip schools of dodgy building materials after safety fears were repeatedly raised over use of reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC). Ministers have scrambled to blame others for the crisis, despite years of warnings about the dangers of RAAC.

Under-fire Education Secretary Gillian Keegan was caught on camera ranting that no one had praised her for doing a "f***ing good job" while others "sit on their a***s". She later enraged heads by telling schools that haven't responded to a Government RAAC survey to "get off their backsides".

Mr Sunak said it was "utterly wrong" to blame him for the crisis - despite the fact he rejected a bid to repair 200 schools a year in 2021 when he was Chancellor. Instead, he stumped up cash to refurbish 50 schools a year.

Unions have also condemned ministers over a decision to axe a major rebuilding programme which would have covered at least 13 schools now found to have collapse-risk concrete. The Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme was axed in 2010 in response to concerns over cost and scope. General Secretary of the Association of School and College Leaders (ASCL) union Geoff Barton said: "I think the nation's parents will think this just reinforces a sense that we have got a Government that frankly doesn't care, and hasn't cared about education for many years."
