Following the exploits of Hollywood superstars Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds after their purchase of Wrexham, the show became a fan favourite as it shed light on the everyday inner workings of a football club. Season one of the documentary, which is now on Disney+, covered the Hollywood duo's first full season and culminated in a heartbreaking play-off defeat.
However, the second season will have the feel-good factor with the North Walian side returning to the EFL for the first time since 2008. The Dragons earned promotion to League Two last term, breaking a National League record in the process as Phil Parkinson's side earned a remarkable 111 points and the owners, Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, were among those in attendance at the Racecourse in April as their side beat Boreham Wood to seal their return to the football league.
The show has been critically acclaimed for its realism and humour, and even won over the hardest of cynics as it revealed itself to be a documentary about the town of Wrexham, the people who live there and support the club, and not as some thought, a vanity project for two actors. Ryan Reynolds emphasised his ambition to have the show focus on the town when he spoke to Variety, the Canadian star said: "If you’re just reading the headlines, you probably think, ‘Oh, this show is going to be funny', it’s gonna be a fish-out-of-water story about two schmucky showbiz morons going in, falling on their a****, learning as they go. But the show literally does not centre us. It centres the town."
While his business partner, and 'It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia' star, McElhenny agreed, adding: "Those were really difficult moments. You realise this is not a game, this is not a television show, these are people’s lives. We do not take any of that lightly, and we were on camera making those decisions."
