Martin Lewis’ MoneySavingExpert.com team has shared the "cheapest" mobile SIM deal they have ever seen.
The MSE team told readers that if they were paying over £10 each month for their mobile phone - unless they were paying off a handset - then they were "likely paying over the odds". This is because tariff data costs have dropped so much over the last few years and shoppers are now getting much more for a lower price.
A SIM-only plan offers a package of minutes, texts and mobile data for a monthly cost, like a traditional mobile phone contract. However, you don't get a new phone included when you get a SIM only plan – you just get a SIM card, which you then insert into your phone to start your plan.
The SIM only deal highlighted by MSE in its weekly email is from Three and actually costs £19 a month. However, the MSE team says the deal comes with a £95 Amazon, Tesco, Sainsbury's or Asda voucher. So if you then factor this in, then it is equivalent to £11.09 a month over the year's contract.
Another £11 deal highlighted by the SME team was from iD Mobile. The deal offered unlimited data for £15 a month but with the £45 Amazon or Curry's voucher you could claim, this made the deal equivalent to £11.25 a month for the year.
Martin Lewis issues 8-week warning to phone users ahead of huge price hikes
The MSE team noted that around 14million Brits are currently "out of contract" and many will have seen a huge price increase on their plans. This year, broadband and mobile phone plans increased by up to 14% in line with January's inflation figure.
The MSE team says if this is you, then you should check if you can cut your costs. The first thing you should do is to check whether you are out of contract or not. You can do this by texting "INFO" for free to 85075.
The team then shared the story from an MSE fan only known as Mick who followed this advice. Mick was with O2 for several years and eventually did look into his other options. He then moved to Virgin SIM only deal and got 10 times the data he was getting at O2. He managed to slash his contract to only £6 a month which would save him £204 a year.
He said: "After staying loyal to O2 for years, I took your advice, looked at my options and moved to Virgin where I got 10 times the data. My contract was going up to £23/mth but is now £6/mth, saving me £204/yr. Thanks."
