After a wet and miserable summer, parts of the UK are battling a sweltering heatwave. With temperatures of 33C expected in several areas over the next couple of days, many are trying desperately to find new, innovative ways of cooling down. Recently people have been stunned to find their blinds have a function that can help keep the heat out, while some might be resorting to sleeping with the fan on, which it turns out can be damaging your health. Some are even using tin foil to keep the sun out of their homes.

Whatever hacks you might try out, it goes without saying that it's incredibly important to stay hydrated while the temperatures are so high, to avoid dehydration and heat exhaustion. But while you should of course keep your water bottle topped up throughout the day, it turns out there's another delicious beverage that could help cool your body down.

Although it might sound counterintuitive, it turns out reaching for hot drinks over cold ones can actually be more effective at keeping your body temperature down. Sipping a cuppa might be the last thing on your mind, but it turns out drinking a certain herbal tea can help keep you cool.

Instead of your normal breakfast brew, a nutritionist has recommended considering peppermint tea, which is known for its anti-inflammatory properties, and can also help cool you down. Simone Thomas, a nutritionist and wellness coach, told the Mirror: "Easy to grow in the garden or in pots, and cheap to pick up in the supermarket, peppermint is the perfect pick me and up and offers a natural way to cool down as the herb's menthol stimulates your body's cooling receptors." When it comes to choosing a hot or cold brew, Simone said she "prefers it cool when it's warm outside as it's so refreshing".

If you can't stand drinking hot drinks in the warm weather, Simone has a great hack to make sure you can still enjoy the herbal remedy. She said: "I also love to make peppermint tea and then freeze it into ice cubes to use later in the day as a further way to keep cool and remain hydrated. You can also add mint and water to a jug of water and call on this natural cocktail all day long when you are feeling the heat and don't want to hit fizzy drinks".
