Multiple flights across the US were grounded as hundreds of users reported an outage in United Airline's systems. The ground stop has now been lifted, according to the airline.

An earlier advisory from the Federal Aviation Administration alerted passengers of the outage impacting United Airlines. A total of 693 users reported the outage on downdetector.com.

United Airlines said in an announcement: "We are experiencing a systemwide technology issue and are holding all aircraft at their departure airports.

"Flights that are already airborne are continuing to their destination as planned. We will share more information as it becomes available. Thank you for your patience as we work on a resolution to get you on your way as soon as possible."

In a fresh update, the airline said that the ground stop was lifted. The Mirror has reached out to United Airlines for a comment.

Passengers took to social media to complain about delays on their journeys. One wrote: "Of course @united is having a nationwide IT issue and we can’t take off"

A Twitter user reportedly said that a United Airlines captain informed them of a computer outage. "Our captain just told us it's a nationwide 'computer glitch'," they wrote.

According to the FAA, the outage is impacting all airports where United Airlines is operating.

Some of the customers responded with humour to the agonising situation, with one commenting on Twitter, referring to the airline: "Try turning up the brightness of the screen."

The FAA confirmed with a fresh update that the ground stop, which lasted for approximately an hour, has been lifted.

United Airlines later added: "We have identified a fix for the technology issue and flights have resumed. We’re working with impacted customers to help them reach their destinations as soon as possible."

Replying to United Airlines' post, Rep. Eric Swalwell wrote on Twitter: "I’m in-flight on a cross-country United plane. As top Dem on House Cyber Subcommittee I will work to get more information to my constituents on this ground stop and whether it reflects a cyber threat. Standby."
