As Britain basks in a late heatwave, we're all heading outside to make the most of the warm weather before the winter months roll in. Whilst we're enjoying the sun, it's important to know the expensive risks we could be easily making that could land us some hefty fines.

So if you're heading out in the sun, drivers are warned about road safety whilst the sun is out, with one little-known driving rule that could result in a £5,000 fine. Chris Jevons, Sales and Marketing Manager at JTAPE, has provided some key driving advice to avoid fines and accidents when driving in warm weather.

When it's hot, it's tempting to put on your flip-flops or sliders. It can be a bother having to put socks and shoes on, so it's no wonder sliders are a summer staple. But did you know it's actually advised in the Highway Code to not wear footwear that restricts your access to the pedals? Chris explained: "Rule 97 of the Highway Code, which advises against wearing any footwear that restricts your ability to use the pedals correctly, including flip flops.

"Not only could your choice of footwear land you a hefty fine of up to £5,000, but it could also cause you to lose control of the vehicle and lead to an accident. If you're a sandals and flip flops kind of person when the warmer weather hits, it's worth keeping a pair of suitable driving shoes like trainers in the car."

As well as footwear, he also stated how important it is to keep cool whilst driving - as heat can cause drowsiness. It's important to keep the windows down or put your A/C on, as he added: "Another rule not to be ignored is that your car must be properly ventilated to prevent drowsiness, as stated by Highway Code Rule 237. While you won't necessarily be fined for not keeping your car cool in hot weather, it could affect your ability to drive properly and slow down your reaction times."

A more obvious one that every driver knows is to avoid alcohol whilst driving. Although it may be tempting to sit and have a drink outside with friends in a beer garden or at a BBQ, drink driving is one of the most serious driving offences with big consequences, and it's not worth risking. Chris stated: "Drink driving is a serious offence and can lead to fines up to £2,500, up to three months imprisonment, and a driving ban. Always find another way to get home safely if you've been drinking, whether it be public transport or relying on a designated driver."

As well as these, there are other driving precautions drivers are warned to keep on top of, such as making sure your coolant levels are topped up, regularly checking your tyre pressure, staying hydrated, and remembering your sunglasses!
