Susanna Reid breaks down over mammogram amid Sarah Ferguson's breast cancer

Good Morning Britain host Susanna Reid has revealed that she went for a mammogram appointment but found it a 'stressful' experience.

The 52 year old presenter, who was co-hosting with former MP Ed Balls, broke down in tears as she recalled the check-up after ignoring a reminder letter due to fear. A mammogram is an essential routine test as it can detect early signs of breast cancer.

Susanna claimed that she finally attended her appointment after hearing Sarah Ferguson's heartfelt plea to women to go for checks following her own breast cancer diagnosis. In June this year, Sarah, 63, announced that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent a successful single mastectomy.

Susanna shared with viewers: "I did go for a mammogram do you remember we were talking about Sarah Ferguson and she had urged everybody to go and do it. I was really resistant to it and then there was a big a row wasn't there that some health authorities weren't sending regular reminders. I remembered that there had been a letter somewhere and so I did it."

She added: "Do you know what? It was slightly stressful because our lovely editor Daniel drove me there and then I left my mobile phone in the car. And then I felt stressed because I didn't have my mobile phone. Then I had to go up to someone else in the waiting room to ask them if I could possibly send an email from their mobile phone to the programme secretary to see if she could contact... anyway the point I was completely distracted. Thank you Daniel for driving me to my mammogram. I went in the nurse was absolutely lovely."

In a bid to reassure the public, Susanna candidly added that she had expected the test to be "far, far worse" and she urged other women to not put it off like she had done. Thankfully, the former Strictly Come Dancing star said that within a few weeks she had her results which came back all clear.

Sarah Ferguson first discovered that something was not right back in May following a routine test that detected a shadow in one of her breasts. Sarah immediately underwent a single mastectomy but she claimed that she was unsure about having a part of her body removed.

But after enduring an eight-hour operation Sarah has been able to resume her life as normal. But the Duchess of York is unfortunately not the only one who has spoken out about being diagnosed with breast cancer. Property TV presenter Sarah Beeny, who appeared on GMB this morning, also spoke of her battle with the disease, which resulted in a double mastectomy.

She told GMB viewers: "I prefer to rub out the difficult bits and just remember all the good bits. That's my personal way of doing it. It was a little bit grueling. I had a very lucky diagnosis and I'm very lucky to live in the UK with the amazing treatment and research. I feel very fortunate and I know other people aren't as fortunate as me."

Sarah is a mother to four boys, Billy, 18, Charlie, 16, Rafferty, 14, and Laurie, 12, with her husband of 19 years Graham Swift. The presenter was given the all-clear from breast cancer but will have to continue with her medication for the next ten years and be vigilant.
