Amazon is to start charging Prime members for same-day delivery for some orders in just under two weeks’ time.

A new charge of £1.99 will apply if your same-day delivery order comes under £20. This fee will kick in for Prime customers from September 18.

At the moment, all items eligible for Prime qualify for free delivery - if same-day delivery is available, you normally need to place your order before midday to get your package by 10pm. The fee for customers who are not Prime members will remain £5.99. Amazon Prime membership costs £8.99 a month or £95 a year.

In an email sent to Prime members, Amazon wrote: "As we invest to improve our same-day delivery service we are writing to let you know about an update to the same-day delivery options available for Prime members in eligible postcodes. The majority of Prime members currently receive most of their Prime orders with one-day delivery, while free same-day delivery can be manually selected for eligible orders.

"From September 18, 2023 eligible Prime orders under £20 will continue to be shipped with free one-day delivery. Where available, same-day delivery can be selected at checkout, but there will be a fee of £1.99 per delivery for orders under £20.”

If you're unhappy about the changes, you can cancel your Prime membership penalty-free. To do this, click on “Accounts & Lists” in the top right hand corner, if you’re on a desktop computer, then click on “Prime” to manage your subscription.

Members who haven't used any Prime services should get a full refund. If you have only used Amazon Prime delivery benefits, then you may be eligible for a partial refund. But if other services - such as Prime Video, Prime Music, or Prime Gaming - have been used, you won’t get a refund.

A new study by TechRadar found digital subscriptions and tech purchases are still being cancelled or delayed due to cost of living crisis. A staggering 50% of those asked had stopped or cut back on entertainment subscriptions in the UK and the US.
