When the schooling of tens of thousands of kids is hit by fresh Tory incompetence the scramble by the Education Secretary and Prime Minister to avoid any responsibility is nauseating and grotesque.

Sweary Gillian Keegan should be apologising that the problem hasn’t been fixed. And she should accept teachers needed more notice to provide alternative classrooms. Rishi Sunak slashed school investment when he was Chancellor. His not-me-guv defence yesterday illustrates just how incapable he is of strong leadership.

Nobody can have confidence that this incompetent Government will deal responsibly with the issue of crumbling concrete, which is likely to shut more schools as well as police stations and other public buildings. The mishandling of the crisis shows why Britain desperately needs change at the top. Britain deserves better.

Steer Starmer

Cracking the whip to demonstrate who is boss, Keir Starmer’s ruthless reshuffle shows he is a leader preparing for a bitter fight with the disintegrating Tories. Formally anointing Northern working class hero Angela Rayner as Shadow Deputy Prime Minister and giving her the Levelling Up brief is an acknowledgement she refreshes the parts other politicians, including him, cannot reach.

The tilt, however, was to the right of the party and Blairism. All the way up to the election, questions will be asked about exactly what Starmer’s Labour would do to improve the lives of working people and revive battered public services. The Labour leader has put into posts the people he wants. Now let’s see vivid, radical and credible policies.

Rob Burrow has brought about lasting change by raising the profile of a condition many people were clueless about. The rugby league legend’s battle with motor neurone disease is a game changer.
