It's long been established that a good night's sleep is part of living a healthy lifestyle, just as much as moving and regular exercise is. A great mattress is also part of the equation for being well-rested and getting better sleep.

Now a new study has revealed that bad mattresses could cause people to lose out on two hours of sleep each night. In a state of desperation, many sleepless Brits have taken to Google to improve their sleeping knowledge and patterns. Searches for "how to sleep better" spiked by 108 per cent on average, every night at around three in the morning.

Dave Gibson, a sleep and wellness expert and founder of , has collaborated with Next to share tips about finding the perfect mattress to help people sleep soundly. The mattress advice should help enhance sleep quality, and knowing when to upgrade as well as how a poor quality mattress can impact more than just sleep.

A simple mattress test to determine whether it needs to be replaced is by just sitting on it. If more than half the mattress sinks then you need to replace it. "One way of checking if your mattress needs replacing is to sit on the edge of it. Then if it collapses by more than 50 per cent it needs to be replaced", Dave explained.

Broken sleep may be caused by a worn-out mattress but other parts of your body can be impacted. Dave revealed that stiffness in your neck, shoulders, and back are also signs a mattress needs to be replaced.

He said: "Typically, the most obvious way you can track your back pain back to your mattress is when you sleep perfectly relaxed and pain-free, and then awake in the morning with pain in the lower back or your neck or your shoulders (or all three). Early morning stiffness can also be a sign that all is not well with your mattress.

The pro added: "You may find that your pain is increased when lying in your bed and then relieved when walking around. However, this may also be due to stiffness in your lower back or neck. Frequent nightly interruptions can also be a sign that you need a new mattress, as well as tossing and turning to find a comfortable spot when normally your sleep is calm and restful."
