The PS Plus free games for September 2023 are releasing this week for Essential subscribers and the lineup includes the open-world survival game Generation Zero.

PS Plus isn't having its greatest showing this month. Alongside the PS Plus price increase, Sony is offering three titles that aren't exactly barn-burners (which when Xbox Game Pass is getting Starfield this month, you would expect PlayStation to fight back with some some heavy-hitters).

One of the offerings this month is Generation Zero from developer Systemic Reaction (which is a subsidiary of Just Cause developer Avalanche Games). Currently sitting at a 45 on Metacritic, this open-world survival game is one of the worst-rated games to hit PS Plus ever (at least on the PS Plus Essential tier). To put that score into context, perennial punching bag Balan Wonderworld sits at a 51 on Metacritic.

Also arriving this month is Saints Row – the 2022 reboot of the Xbox 360's greatest GTA clone. This title scaled back some of the sillier elements of the later Saints Row games (namely superpowers) and moved the saints to the Vegas-inspired Santo Ileso. Despite players waiting for a reboot of the series for a long time, the title didn't do as well as many had hoped, with reviewers claiming the gameplay felt dated.

Saints Row would sadly be the last title developed by the series' creator Volition (also known for the Red Faction series) as the studio announced it was closing down this past Friday.

PS Plus free games September 2023 release time

PS Plus Essential titles release on Tuesday of every month which lands on Tuesday, September 5 this month. The three games will be redeemable on Tuesday, September 5 at 10am BST / 5am EDT / 2am PDT. The PS Plus section on the PlayStation website can be a bit slow at showing these titles, however, if you search for the titles on the PlayStation Store website they should be available to add to your library.

When the new titles arrive on PS Plus, it also means the titles from last month are gone forever, so make sure to redeem the PS Plus Essential August 2023 games (Death's Door, Dreams, and PGA Tour 2K23) before the new batch releases.

The PS Plus free games for September 2023 will be available until the next batch arrives. So you'll have until Tuesday, October 4 to add Saints Row, Generation Zero, and Black Desert – Traveler Edition to your library.
