Klopp issues Alexander-Arnold injury update after Liverpool star limps off

Jurgen Klopp has confirmed Trent Alexander-Arnold will have a scan to determine the extent of the injury he suffered in the win over Aston Villa.

Alexander-Arnold captained Liverpool in their clash with Villa at Anfield on Sunday, but was forced off after 71 minutes. The right-back picked up a suspected hamstring issue, with Jarell Quansah replacing him for the rest of the Reds' win.

And that will leave Alexander-Arnold sweating on the results of a scan, with the Liverpool star having been included in the England squad for the upcoming international break. The star will now undergo further assessment to find out the extent of his injury.

“I don’t know exactly. I asked him, he said it’s [his] hamstring. ‘Not too serious’ is his opinion, but we obviously have to wait for the scans and then we will know more," Klopp said after the win over Villa.

Goals from Dominik Szoboszlai and Mohamed Salah, as well as Matty Cash's own-goal ensured Liverpool claimed a dominant win over Villa. It was a result that left boss Klopp delighted, despite Alexander-Arnold's injury.

"It was a top game, the best for a while, a long time. I don’t know the last time we were that convincing, and we had a few good games obviously now – especially the end of last season and these kinds of things. That was really good," he said.

"In both departments, offensively like defensively. You cannot do one step less against this Aston Villa team, then you struggle immediately. But the early goal might have helped, I’m not sure, we don’t know how the game would have looked without scoring.

"But we looked really, really good. The mix in possession between control and direction was close to perfect. That’s how it felt. We could use the formation today properly, everybody wanted the ball or protected or showed or offered.

"So, it was a top game, cannot say differently. I don’t know when I can say that the next time, but for today it was as good as could be, because the opponent is extremely strong and we didn’t let that happen today. That’s a massive compliment to my boys."

Losing Alexander-Arnold would be a bitter blow for England boss Gareth Southgate. He is already bracing for Jack Grealish to withdraw through injury and had been plotting for Alexander-Arnold to play a role in midfield.

“I’ve got no questions in my head that he can do it. It’s just learning some nuances of the role. Without the ball especially it’s very different for him. But he’s very keen to do it," Southgate said after June's win over Malta, where Alexander-Anrold feature in midfield.

"We talked about it four weeks ago on the phone and I think he’s been excited by it. He showed exactly what he could be capable of and he gives us something different to our other midfielders.”

Southgate will likely wait for the results of Alexander-Arnold's scan before deciding if a replacement is needed. Jude Bellingham, Conor Gallagher, Jordan Henderson, Kalvin Phillips, Declan Rice are the other midfielders named in the squad.
