Just as the UK has been told to expect a sizzling summer week, a gloomy prediction has been made over when the colder, wetter weather will return.

Despite months of waiting, the country is only now set to feel some scorching temperatures and warm sunny days in the summer months.

By the middle of this week, a heat blast from the continent should see the UK post its hottest day "since July 7", thanks to the tail end of a weather system that wreaked havoc on the US last month.

But, things aren't expected to last for long, with weather maps showing some rain and storms hitting the north of the UK and Scotland by next weekend.

Weather forecaster Met Office said: "The far northwest of Scotland and parts of the west may experience slightly cloudier and breezier conditions with occasional showers.

"However, as the period progresses, conditions are likely to become more changeable, with an increased chance of rain or showers for all areas, some heavy or thundery.

"Northwestern areas will probably see the most frequent rain, while southeastern areas retain more prolonged drier weather. Temperatures are likely to return closer to normal during mid-September, although they will probably still be above average."

Towards the end of the next week and into the following week, maps have shown rain is set to hit the UK even harder up north - ending the short but sweet sunny spell.

Although September 1 marks the start of meteorological Autumn, it seems we might be in for some warm temperatures yet, with the mercury forecast to rise to nearly 30C in London and southern England later this week.

In a Tweet from the official Met Office account, the weather experts said: "Temperatures will be notably above average for many of us over the coming week. We could even climb towards 30°C in parts of southern England - something we haven't seen since 7 July."

The meteorologists' official forecast for Tuesday to Thursday next week also spells out that we should expect the mercury to rise. It says: "Mostly dry with very warm or hot sunshine. However, patches of low cloud and fog overnight. Some drizzle in the far north, and showers possible later, mainly in the west."

Met Officespokesperson Stephen Dixon also told the Mirror how the ailing Cyclone Franklin across the pond could play a role in helping warm weather hit the UK. He said: “Franklin itself hit parts of America earlier this week but hasn’t been on land for a bit. It’s sat up in the Atlantic, a deep area of low pressure, and what these systems do is help to move air masses to the UK.

“This low-pressure system is helping draw warmer air over the UK, the warmer continental air which will bring temperatures up to the mid-20s in parts of England and Wales. Initially, it’ll help develop the warmer conditions.”
