Hair thinning is a concern for many people, and if you notice that your locks aren't as thick as they once were, you may be wondering how to restore them to their former glory. It may feel like an impossible task, but a trichologist has shared that there are actually multiple methods you can try to thicken your tresses.

Faisal Ahmed Hammadi, co-founder of Poweryourcurls.com, has shared that there are a number of reasons that your hair may begin to become thinner including "family background, existing medical conditions, side effects from medications, or hormonal changes." But there are also things you can do to help.

Faisal told The Mirror: "Hair thinning can lead to hair loss if not addressed quickly. Some signs include widening of the parting in your hair, there is thinning on top of your head, and handfuls of strands being removed when you brush or wash your hair."

But if you're experiencing this, there are steps you can take to help, such as eating certain foods in your diet. "To battle hair thinning, eat foods rich in iron, zinc, Vitamin B12, and Omega 6 fatty acids", he recommended. "These include dairy products, eggs, walnuts, fruits, and vegetables.

And he said that you should address the stress in your life, as this could be causing the thinning. He said: "Stress can be one of the issues that impact your hair. The way to prevent this from happening is to start taking steps to manage stress. Scalp massages may help lessen the stress."

Also, avoid hair styles that cause tension, gently brush your hair, and keep it away from sunlight. Faisal shared: "Tight hairstyles such as high ponytails can add a lot of stress to the scalp. With this, it could pull the hairline and cause hair thinning. Opt for loose hairstyles that do not cause excessive tension to the scalp." Using loose hair ties could help with this, or silk or satin scrunchies, which can be purchased from Boots for £3.50.

"Use a detangler when combing your hair and choose the perfect hairbrush/comb for your hair and scalp", he said. "Avoid tugging or creating a pulling force when combing your hair especially when it is still wet." And he also recommended not exposing hair to UV light, as "excessive sun exposure can also cause baldness. Make sure to use protective wear when going out during extreme sunny weather."
