Shaw update perfectly explains why Man Utd agreed last-gasp Reguilon deal

Luke Shaw is expected to be out for ten weeks underlining Manchester United's need to find a new left-back.

The England international was injured in the recent defeat at Tottenham and is expected to be sidelined for a prolonged period, leaving Erik ten Hag short defensively. That motivated their pursuit of Sergio Reguilon, who will make a loan move to Old Trafford.

Shaw started 30 times for United in the Premier League last term, filling in on the flanks and as a makeshift centre-half. He will leave a sizeable hole and the Manchester outfit have agreed a loan deal for the Tottenham man with a medical due to take place. The club have a break clause which they can trigger come January with no purchase option included in the deal whilst they will cover Reguilon's entire salary.

United had targeted Marc Cucurella at Chelsea, but he appeared for the Blues in their Carabao Cup win over Wimbledon on Wednesday night which complicated the deal, according to the Daily Mail, and Ten Hag has since shifted his focus to Reguilon, who was out of favour in north London.

The Spaniard came through the ranks at Real Madrid before moving to the English capital but spent last season on loan at Atletico Madrid. A move for Reguilon will allow United to fill the void left by the injured Shaw with Tyrell Malacia also pushing to be fully fit once more. They can then reassess their options in January, when they can cut ties with the Spaniard.

Ange Postecoglou has been in the midst of assessing his Tottenham squad having arrived this summer but, whilst certain players have been bought in from the cold, Reguilon doesn't appear to be part of his plans and must seek a new club if he wants to enjoy more minutes.

United could yet have a hectic deadline day as they seek more new faces following an indifferent start to the campaign. Ten Hag's side have so far underwhelmed in their three league matches with their need for a new midfielder clear to see, hence their pursuit of Sofyan Amrabat.

The Dutch boss has spent big once again this summer - adding more than £150m worth of talent in Andre Onana, Mason Mount and Rasmus Hojlund. Last summer the likes of Casemiro and Lisandro Martinez were bought in.

Several names could also look to leave Manchester with Dean Henderson already securing a move away to Crystal Palace. Scott McTominay and Harry Maguire have both been linked with moves away but none have yet materialised with transfer fees and wages potentially an issue.
