Brits baffled to discover Americans call penne pasta something totally different

Whether you live in the UK or the US, we can all agree on the importance of tasty food. We just happen to differ on the names we use to describe said grub from time to time. Most of us know fish and chips mean different things depending on where you are. Equally, it's no great surprise 'cookie' and 'biscuit' mean something else across the pond.

But Brits have been left shocked after learning what some Americans call penne pasta - as it's entirely different. Sharing their upset over the discovery online, one foodie took to X (formerly known as Twitter ) to spread the news.

"Americans call penne pasta noodles? I feel like I'm gonna be sick," they wrote. The post was accompanied by a photo of the classic dish, captioned: "He doesn't even like noodles." Stunned, one commenter said: "Surely not!!!" "I hate that they do that," replied a second, and a third thought: "That's — terrible for them." Someone else revealed: "The other day I heard one call lasagna sheets 'noodles' and had to stay off my phone for a while."

However, several people were quick to defend Americans, pointing out that not everyone opts for 'noodles'. "One woman saying it doesn't mean every American babes," read one such reply. "That's one person saying that bestie," echoed another.

"I usually don't defend Americans but literally what Americans are you talking about because I've lived here my whole life and noodles have only ever applied to like actual noodles and not penne," someone added. A different commenter clarified: "Uhh no. Unless it's a toddler, people call it penne." "Correct, never ever heard someone call these noodles," a second agreed.

But someone else claimed: "Um penne are noodles." "If it's long and pasta, it's a noodle to me idk," another added. Meanwhile, a third commenter said: "They call everything noodles & technically they are but yea it's odd to me as an Italian."
