Liverpool change Gravenberch transfer plan after 'striking contract agreement'

Liverpool have opened formal talks with Bayern Munich over a deal for Ryan Gravenberch after Manchester United made their move for Sofyan Amrabat.

Gravenberch, 21, has been on the radar of both the Reds and United ahead of Friday's transfer deadline, with the midfielder open to a move after starting just three matches in the Bundesliga last season.

Liverpool and United are both expected to bring in midfield reinforcements before the transfer window shuts - and with United now actively pursuing a move for Amrabat, the path has been cleared for Liverpool to try and strike a deal with Bayern Munich.

According to The Athletic, the Reds have opened talks with Bayern over a permanent deal for Gravenberch, with both clubs said to be discussing their valuations of the midfielder. The Reds were originally only planning to seek a loan deal for the Dutch ace.

Liverpool's move comes just hours after Manchester United saw a loan bid for Amrabat rejected by Fiorentina. Much like Amrabat, Gravenberch is also a player who has been regularly linked with a transfer to the Premier League over the past six months.

The former Ajax midfielder has struggled to make an impression in Germany and is open to a move. Mirror Football revealed back in April that the Reds had even thrashed out a number of details with Gravenberch ahead of a potential switch, including a salary offer.

Bayern Munich, meanwhile, are reportedly readying a bid for Fulham's defensive midfielder Joao Palhinha before the deadline; a move which would see Gravenberch fall even further down the pecking order in Munich.

Gravenberch had admitted earlier this week that he "doesn't know" whether or not he will be given the option to leave Bayern before Friday, but he has already made it clear he will not tolerate another season sitting on the sidelines.

In an interview with Dutch media outlet De Telegraaf conducted last month, Gravenberch said: “It may be that there are plans with me. I haven't really talked to the coach about that yet, that will come after the [Under-21] European Championship when I'm back from Georgia and Romania. Then we will see how it is.”

Jurgen Klopp remains keen on bringing another midfielder to the club before the transfer window shuts after losing the services of both Fabinho and Jordan Henderson this summer.
