Former Manchester United striker Dwight Yorke has expressed his desire to manage Wrexham in the future if given the opportunity.

Wrexham are in the early stages of their first season back in the Football League after spending 15 years in the National League, becoming champions in 2022/23. However, the Welsh club have endured a difficult start to life in English football’s fourth tier.

Phil Parkinson’s side have won just one of their first five League Two fixtures, a 4-2 victory over Walsall. Wrexham suffered a 5-3 loss to MK Dons on the opening day, while the other three matches ended in draws including a 5-5 stalemate with Swindon Town.

While there has been no pressure on Parkinson’s position as manager, Yorke has expressed his interest in moving into the dugout at Wrexham. The 51-year-old won six major trophies with Man United and was a key figure in the famous 1998/99 treble-winning season.

Yorke is relatively inexperienced in the managerial department, with his only senior job being six months in charge of the Australian A-League club Macarthur. But the Man United legend has sent a message to Wrexham owners, Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney in an effort to stake a claim to be the club’s next manager.

“I'm unemployed as a manager and I'm very passionate about trying to get back into the industry,” Yorke told . “If Wrexham approached me and asked me to manage the team, I'd consider it. I have to make a decision that aligns with my ideas and ambitions. If Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney matched my mindset, then it's a good opportunity for me.

“There's a lot of hype around the club and that's understandable because of what the owners bring to the club. If the opportunity presents itself to me and have that initial conversation with the owners about our vision for the club, then it's a serious and exciting gig. It's a football job that you need to be your best at, not somewhere to have fun."

Parkinson has been in charge of Wrexham since the summer of 2021 and is now in the early stages of his third season as manager. Wrexham are now preparing for their next League Two game against Tranmere Rovers on Saturday, which comes after the Carabao Cup exit at the hands of Bradford City in midweek.
