Erik ten Hag could lose out on signing Luke Thomas after James Maddison recommended the Leicester defender to Leeds boss Daniel Farke.

Manchester United are in the market to bring in a new left-back before end of the window following Luke Shaw's latest injury setback. The 28-year-old is set to miss at least six weeks with a muscle problem and did not feature in the Red Devils' 3-2 win over Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

Ten Hag is keen to add at least one left-sided defender to his squad within the next 72 hours and Thomas is one player United are interested in, according to The Athletic. The 22-year-old has fallen down the pecking order at Leicester and is expected to leave before Friday's 11pm deadline.

However, Thomas is also attracting attention from Leeds as the Championship side look to sign a left-back after Sam Byram limped off with another injury last weekend. Thomas is eager to play first-team football having failed to make a single appearance under new Leicester boss Enzo Maresca.

With Junior Firpo also still out, Thomas could slot straight into the Leeds side and the move has been given the green light by ex-Leicester teammate Maddison. As per talkSPORT, Maddison has recommended the England Under 21 international to Farke, who worked with the now-Tottenham star at Norwich.

Leicester are likely to favour a permanent exit for Thomas, who has one year left on his contract at King Power Stadium. The left-back was completely left out of the Foxes squad for the Carabao Cup trip to Tranmere on Tuesday evening and could become the latest of many defensive departures this week.

Fulham confirmed the arrival of Timothy Castagne in a deal worth around £13m on Tuesday, while Victor Kristiansen is in Italy ahead of his proposed loan switch to Bologna. Harry Souttar may also leave as Rangers continue to be linked with a move for the Australia centre-back.

As for United, Ten Hag has drawn up a list of left-back options, with former Leicester defender Ryan Bertrand also a target for the Red Devils. The 34-year-old is a free agent after leaving the Foxes in June and made just 11 appearances during his two-year stay in the East Midlands.

Sergio Reguilon, meanwhile, is another option United are looking at. The Spaniard could depart Tottenham before the transfer window slams shut, having struggled for game time under Ange Postecoglou. Marcos Alonso is also a name that has been linked with the Red Devils this week.

But United are set to go ahead and sign Marc Cucurella instead in a season-long loan move from Chelsea. The 25-year-old has already agreed personal terms with the Red Devils and Ten Hag wants to conclude a deal as soon as possible ahead of their trip to Arsenal on Sunday.

Cucurella has been an unused substitute in Chelsea's first three Premier League matches of the new season, with Ben Chilwell preferred ahead of him. Diogo Dalot slotted in at left-back for the win over Forest but Ten Hag has persuaded the United hierarchy to look for another option.
