Little-known day when British Gas customers can get half-price electricity

As we approach September temperatures across the UK are dropping which for most bill-paying households will means two things; heating and rising energy costs. And customers with British Gas may be able to save extra pennies off their energy bills.

It's all thanks to its PeakSave Sunday's put in place by the provider which'll half the price of customers electricity bills for five hours. To top it off, bill payers will also be given half of what they spent back credited to their account, so households can use and save on electricity at the same time.

As the name suggests it's only available to do on Sunday of each week between the hours of 11am to 4pm, timings where users are encouraged to use as much energy as they need as it's considered to be a 'low demand' time.

This means everyday tasks like running the tumble dryer, dishwasher, dehumidifier, electric heater and even cooking would cost you less than in the week. Being at the end of the week it's likely a lot of households will be catching up on chores and cooking a big family meal so it's a chance to save on the appliances that normally use up a hefty amount.

But it's only a money-saving hack to cut on your energy bill if you know where to look or meet the looming September deadline.

That's right, British Gas are currently only running the PeakSave scheme until Sunday, September 24, so there's just under a month for current or new customers to make the most of the savings. The provider also ran the project in winter last year (between November 2022 and March 2023) which saw each person claim an average of £28 back, but it's not known if it'll be offered again this coming winter.

How do PeakSave Sunday's work?

If you're looking to save half of your usual electricity costs the first step is to make sure you have a smart meter. Then, follow these steps: do as much as possible between 11am and 4pm each Sunday, then follow these steps.

1. You only need to sign up once, not each Sunday, which you can do via British Gas website.

2. Use as much energy between 11am and 4pm each Sunday.

3. You don't need to send in any figures, British Gas will use your smart meter to work out how much you used and give you back half the amount.
4. The savings and payment will then show in your account as 'Peak Save Credit'.
