An American man fell to his death after attending a wedding in Italy’s Lake Como.

Octavio Couto Da Silva, a 52-year-old highly regarded jiu-jitsu master known by his nickname "Ratinho," met a tragic end during a visit to Italy's Lake Como for a friend's wedding. The incident occurred as he was returning to his hotel around 6:30 a.m. on a Saturday.

Reports suggest that he lost his balance while sitting on a low wall and fell approximately 16 feet into the water below. The exact cause of his death, whether it resulted from the impact of the fall or drowning, remains uncertain pending further investigation.

At the time he left the wedding celebration at the Villa del Balbianello, Da Silva seemed to be in good condition despite having consumed alcohol earlier in the evening. He had taken a taxi boat to Tremezzo, a nearby area, but had separated from his companions as they were staying at different hotels.

Da Silva's impact on the world of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was significant. He was a renowned 6th Degree Black belt, having retired from professional fighting to dedicate his time to training the next generation of jiu-jitsu practitioners. His accomplishments as a fighter included gold medals at the 1993 CBJJ Brazilian National Championships and the 1994 Copa Atlantico Sul Championships.

Da Silva was a founding member of Alliance Barra Academy, a prominent training school that holds substantial recognition within the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu community. He also extended his expertise as a consultant to various training academies across the United States over the course of two decades.

Many students fondly remembered his warmth, community-building spirit, and willingness to share his talents.

Former student Hunter Crenshaw shared an image of himself with Da Silva, writing: “Professor was not just a man in a gi. He was a true leader, never showing signs of tyranny but always signs of a warm welcoming community. He helped so many good men/women around me be great men/women.”
