Jesse Lingard is set to join West Ham on a free transfer, though the Hammers will first prioritise signing a new striker.

Lingard left Nottingham Forest at the end of last season, having struggled to make an impact in his only campaign at the City Ground. He is still yet to find a new club, though has spent some time training with West Ham in recent weeks.

The midfielder previously featured for the Hammers in the 2020/2021 campaign, spending the second-half of that season on loan at the London Stadium from Manchester United. He returned to Old Trafford to fight for a place at the Red Devils, though that did not come to pass.

Instead, he left Old Trafford last summer, but rather than return to West Ham as many expected, he picked Forest as his next club. That proved to be a mistake though, with the former England international getting released.

He could be handed a route back into the game by former boss David Moyes though, with the Evening Standard reporting that it is 'increasingly likely' Lingard will be offered a short-term contract.

The midfielder is said to have impressed during his sessions with the Hammers, though the deal does not have to be completed before Friday's deadline as he is a free agent. Instead, the Premier League side will prioritise signing a new striker.

With Danny Ings failing to fire, technical director Tim Steitden has flown out to Brazil to finalise a move for Corinthians wonderkid Yuri Alberto. Upon leaving Forest, Lingard had insisted he had achieved his goal for the club.

"Thank you to everybody from the fans to all the back room staff and of course the players. Been a rollercoaster journey but we stuck together through thick and thin and achieved our goal. It’s been a pleasure," he posted on Instagram.

If he does complete his move to West Ham as expected, Lingard will be joining one of the early Premier League pacesetters. David Moyes' men are second, two points behind leaders Manchester City, after beating Brighton on Saturday.

"I didn’t know we were top of the league! Someone in the dressing room just told me and it’s a great feeling at the moment. The more important thing, though, is that we’ve come and won at Brighton," Moyes said.

"We’ve had some dark days here and we ended up in the UEFA Europa Conference League that year we lost in the second half here a couple of seasons ago, which may have been a good thing in the end.

"So we’ve had disappointing days here and the supporters are always worried about watching the game here. It’s great to get rid of those days and give the supporters this victory. The players are doing such a good job and the way they’re going about their work is brilliant."
