There's nothing worse than making your garden look pretty, only for pesky bugs to come along and demolish your greenery. It can leave you angry and determined to get rid of them, but many chemical-based products you can purchase can be dangerous to other wildlife, and even household pets that may roam in your garden. They can also come with a rather hefty price tag.

But one gardener, who regularly posts accessible green-fingered content on his Instagram page, has shared a simple solution that will keep the bugs at bay, allowing your blooms to flourish for longer. Joe captioned the helpful video, explaining what you need to do. He wrote: "Today we are back and I am showing you a natural solution to help prevent those annoying small bugs from damaging your plants!

"This remedy is great but I find it works as more of a deterrent than a fix if you already have an infestation. That being said it has cleared up quite a few small aphid groups on my plants. It is worth noting I would normally wait until the sun has set to apply the spray, but I wanted to get the video today.

"Obviously, you can use bug sprays from the store, but often they will contain quite harsh and environmentally damaging chemicals. This mixture offers a completely natural alternative. Now, am I suggesting it works as well as the store-bought ones, probably not, but it is still very effective! So effective in fact, that I am able to grow my brassicas without any form of netting!

"Just please be careful with your mixtures and it is always a good idea to spray on one test plant first before spraying all of your crops. That way if anything has gone wrong you can make adjustments. The sort of concentration you are aiming for is basically water with a very subtle hint of garlic. It is worth noting while it keeps bad bugs off your plants it may do the same with good! So be cautious about what plants you use it on! So how do I make my bug spray?

"1) Peel 1 whole garlic and add the cloves to 275ml of water and the smallest drop of organic dish soap and blend. 2) Once all of the chunks have been removed pour into a larger container and add another 750 ml of water to dilute. 3) Leave in a cool place or even the fridge for 12 hours minimum to allow the garlic sulphur compounds to infuse the water. 4) Drain through a fine cloth and transfer to a spray bottle, apply to your vulnerable plant leaves such as brassicas in the evening once a week!"

Garlic can be bought for just 24p per bulb from Sainsbury's, and washing-up liquid can be purchased for £1 from Tesco.

In the comments, people praised the hack, with one writing: "I've used this for years! It's great at keeping slugs at bay too!!" Another said: "Great tip! I didn't know garlic helped to treat powdery mildew. I'll be trying this August when powdery mildew runs rampant in my area."
